Irex is back with IRX - 6 fps on Sipix screen
The team who brought us the legend that is Iliad e-reader is back.
They have managed to squeeze 6 fps animation out of a Sipix sreen, with 10 more fps possible. http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/20/a...could-go-as-h/ |

I think people would much rather see them create a viable company than try and squeeze 16fps out of e ink. More need for good large screen readers than one that can play sub standard video.

The problem with iRex is that they were always good at producing inovative hardware - but then releasing sub-standard machines with buggy and unfinished firmware that never met the promises made for them. They'd have to release a heck of a good machine for me to buy from them again - I've had my fingers burnt once too often by them.

I agree. They are a R&D company, they should leave the final production, marketing and sales to companies that make that their core business...

i wonder why they are even showing a sipix display at this point? why not show of what they can do with Eink?
also- they wont be producing an IRX labeled product. they are only going to help design devices that will be produced and labeled for others |

That's kinda nifty, video on e-ink. Choppy as it may be.

Slow motion black and white video? What is the point, other than showing some progress is being made? Wake me up when they are showing videos on color e-ink. I do like B&W e-ink for reading, but videos?

Think text books. Where graphs are being made up. Sort of animated gif idea.

I got burnt by this company. Nice looking and nice sounding stuff but if it goes wrong you are toast. Service from them was non existant.

I've had a DR800 for 16 trouble free months. However, the article author makes the comment that they might succeed if they can make their units cheap enough. I would ask when ever iRex made anything cheap?

My understanding is that's exactly what the "new" IRX company is planning on doing. They said a while ago that they weren't going to be in the consumer business anymore.

remember 6 "frames per second" here means 6 "page-turns" per second. You'll begin to waste your battery as much as LCD, except to display choppy B&W or washedout color videos.
E Ink should be used for static content. Just like PDF should be used for fixed layout. |
