E Ink's Smart Snowboard

Quote:
Definitely the most whimsical is a snowboard with a semi-circular black and white display showing a compass, clock, and weather predictions.

The idea is not to give grandparents nightmares about teens reading text messages while plowing down mountainsides, but to demonstrate future directions for the company's flexible, rugged, low-power displays.
Quote:
The low power requirements for these displays—once the image changes, it doesn't require any power to maintain it—and good readability under sunlight will, the company hopes, enable them to expand into a broader range of products. The company has started to get these displays in point-of-sale display ads in stores. Combined with static color images, the black-and-white E Ink backing flashing on and off makes an ad for detergent or athletic shoes appear animated.

Another fun was a music stand that would display the music instead of holding it up, with a foot pedal at the bottom to turn the page.

So what happens if a conductor is leading an orchestra and either he or one of the members of the orchestra suffers a bout of restless leg syndrome? Ooops, suddenly the victim is on page x rather than where they should be.

Well, technological progress isn't for everybody... I think it's rather neat to be able to turn pages, as it were, with a foot tap.

If this results in one frat guy hitting a tree then I'll consider the technology a success.

Finally a thermostat. I designed a thermostat using segmented eink display 4 years ago. time to dust it off and see about getting them produced....

the snowboard is too showcase the idea and to show ruggedness. i understand they were letting people stomp on it at the show. where that display belongs it on the sleeve of a winter coat with the electronics package in pocket in the armpit area or . gps , elevation , weather updates etc for folks who lose their way or are in back country.

E-ink doesn't work quite as well in cold temperatures, making a snowboard an iffy choice of an demo application.

the segmented displays operate well at a lower temp than the active matrix displays
