Why wouldn't it work ?
If it doesn't, then that is a direct result of the changes made.
Show the changes you intend to make, we can offer a guess as to if it will work.

And it is **NOT** embedded, it is appended (although in general, it does not have to be, it can be a separate file).

NOTE: Do not write the kernel being tested to flash memory - load it into and run it from memory until you are certain it is working as intended.
