Magnified Comparison of eInk / Kindle and iPad Displays

In case anyone is curious, some wonk got his hand on a USB microscope and wound up taking a close look at a Kindle 2 and an iPad....

Not sure if it makes any difference in terms of readability, but it's pretty wild that the eInk looks a lot like ink on paper when you examine it at 400x magnification.

Pretty interesting. It looks like some of the contrast problems with eInk are related to individual subcells getting stuck on black, causing the background to lose whiteness (I'd assume that some also get stuck on white). I'm looking forward to see what the Pearl screen looks like - maybe they just managed to sort out what was causing the cells to stick. Also, the mosaic is amazingly irregular!
