Count Doukon New Os for Kindle ! Rejoice!
Good news. A group in China is making a replacement OS for the Kindle.
you may remember the awful prequel star wars films which were utterly horrible with no story, drama, tension and horrible actors acting to a green screen and acting with terrible sound effects with that hideous twanging sound effect for spaceships. you may remember it had a villain called count doukan who stood out like a sore thumb amongst the rubbish cardboard "actors". while researching the kindle indexing issue lo and behold i came across a website which claimed the chinese had written a new os for the kindle 1 ,2 and 3 !!! it is called duoken after the star wars geezer. here is the link. EPUB, CHM, DOC and djvu documents on your Kindle? It’s possible! The alternative OS for Kindle, Duokan, is now available with an english GUI supporting these document types. Duokan works with Kindle 2, 3 and DX and it will install besides the original OS, so you’re able to switch easily between it and the original Kindle OS. you can install it it in 10 minutes. you can switch between kindle os and doukon os! it is thought to have folder support too. and reads epub too!. the lust goes on and on of the new features and i wonder if anyone here knows about it and has installed it and if they could youtube a demonstration of it so we can share their experience. it is free too! http://flip.netzbeben.de/2010/11/duo...ish-gui-today/ http://www.duokan.com/forum/thread-4688-2-1.html . . You typed out Doukon, Douken, and Doukan, but you still couldn't get it right.
The characters name was Count Dooku. Doukan (dou kan) means (and someone feel free to correct me, my Chinese is very rudimentary) something along the lines of, 'to see many'. It's not related to the Star Wars character at all, unless they renamed the character for the releases in China. |

os stands for operating system in case people are puzzled. however the question is has anyone here installed and tried it? it does not seem too difficult and it has loads more options then the existing amazon os. epub support which is the holy grail of kindle owners and a recurrent fantasy that amazon will enable it in some far future update which is unlikely. |

I'm not sure if you're joking or not, but Duokan has been around for goodness knows how many years. It's not a replacement operating system; just a different set of application software. The Kindle is still running the Linux operating system.
On the remote chance that you're being serious, and weren't actually aware of Duokan before now, you'll find endless discussion of it in the "Kindle Developer's Corner" forum. Last edited by HarryT; 12-21-2011 at 09:03 AM. |

I opened this thread thinking there was a new release of the software. Funny that someone on this site didn't realize this has been around for so long. It's either a failure of the person researching, or the failure of the site in terms of finding information.

new release soon
Looking forward to this month's update of Duokan Light which will, finally, include Mobi support.
The old Duokan hasn't been updated since the spring and its mobi/epub support is just so-so. Duokan light promises to be something better. English website: http://en.duokan.com/ |

however if doukan is safe then i may try it but it is very difficult to understand its features as the site translation is awful and i wonder if a intelligent properly fluent andable to write proper english , chinese person could improve the translation. i am fed up with the amazon crippled software which is really bad and infantile. we are all told how wonderful linux is yet it is soslow and buggy. i wonder if it would possible to install mobile windows or ce windows on the kindle? |

What you're describing as "soslow and buggy" is Amazon's java framework. Hate if you want... just educate your hate a bit. So it makes sense. |

Vugtitan, I guess a lot of people will be glad to take that slow and buggy Kindle off your hands.

btw, 看 (kan) also means 'to read' (in 看书), so the name duokan can also mean "(to) read more"

This flexibility is something that European language with their rigid structural cages (grammar) are lacking. Since your name indicates you are German (or at least speak German), you will know what I am talking about, lol. Last edited by HansTWN; 12-22-2011 at 09:41 PM. |
