The General's Envoy by Anthony Conway, 2nd in his Caspasian series of early 20th century military action adventure thrillers, this installment originally out from Hodder & Stoughton in 2001. Warlord China, 1927. Seconded to China by a vengeful Indian Army high command, Gurkha Captain John Caspasian finds Shanghai a cesspit of despair and corruption as refugees pour into the violent, disease-ridden city. He escapes on a solo mission to contact a general whom the British see as a bulwark against the revolutionary leader Chiang Kai-shek. Once he has left the relative safety of the International Settlement for a gunboat on the Yangtze though, Caspasian smells danger. The supposedly friendly General Mok turns out to be a bloodthirsty sadist whose armoured train has struck terror into the Chinese countryside. And Caspasian has made two implacable enemies. One is a Chinese criminal who first clashed with him over a rescued bar girl. The other is a former British officer who once saved Caspasian's life... |

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:
The Arkansas River by Jory Sherman, 1st in the Rivers West series of historical frontier westerns, originally paperbacked from Domain in 1991. Sherman, IIRC, was also a Dorchester/Leisure author before they imploded. Rivers West is one of the most exciting frontier series of our time… tales of mountain men and intrepid women, pioneer families and Native American warriors. Here is the story of North America in all its awesome splendor. Eastward, as far as the eye could see, stretched the Great Plains. Westward rose the Rockies, snow-capped shadows against the sky. In the middle flowed a mighty river—silent, glistening, and turbulent—the bloodline of a wide and wild land. Three hard, tough men staked their claims on its potent shores; Jake Stonecipher, pioneer merchant, seeking his fortune—yet finding a war. Will Burke, a mountain man as savage as the wilderness itself. And Francisco Serrano, determined to carve a fertile ranch out of the stubborn soil. Three men blazing trails, forging a future… building lives as bold—and treacherous—as the Arkansas River. |

Into Darkness by Anton Gill
As it becomes clear that Hoffman has not been a "good Nazi" he decides to go on the run, mere hours ahead of the SS Agents who are sent to arrest him. As a fugitive, Hoffman only has one objective: to fight one last battle against the people that turned against him, his friends and his family - and against one man in particular. `Into Darkness' is a superb historical thriller, which sheds light not only upon the end days of the Third Reich but also upon one man, trying to serve his country and conscience. Anton Gill has been a freelance writer since 1984, specialising in European contemporary history but latterly branching out into historical fiction. He is the winner of the H H Wingate Award for non-fiction for his study of survivors of the Nazi concentration camps, "The Journey Back From Hell". `Gill has deftly synthesized scholarly and more popular historical writing to produce an impressively accessible an interesting work' - Kirkus Reviews `Immensely informative and readable' - The Times Free where I could check http://www.amazon.co.uk/Into-Darknes...dp/B00MOP3KQU/ http://www.amazon.ca/Into-Darkness-A...dp/B00MOP3KQU/ http://www.amazon.com/Into-Darkness-.../dp/B00MOP3KQU http://www.amazon.com.au/Into-Darkne.../dp/B00MOP3KQU |

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:
Sarah: A Novel of Sarah Bernhardt by Joel Gross, a biofic about the famous stage actress, originally out from William Morrow (now a HarperCollins imprint) in 1987. Gross' bio-blurb says that his other books have been selected for the Book of the Month Club and the Literary Guild. The author neglects to put in a proper description for his e-book, so I had to grab a rather bland one from an old paperback reprint edition. There is however, an included Publisher's Weekly review which will tell you a lot more about the storyline. An historically detailed account of the life of an actress, based on the true story of Sarah Bernhardt whose career began in Paris during the 1860s and brought her 60 years of world-wide fame. |

Today's Open Road Freebie
Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson
Overview: Winesburg, Ohio (1919) is Sherwood Anderson's masterpiece, a cycle of short stories concerning life in a small Ohio town at the end of the nineteenth century. At the centre is George Willard, a young reporter who becomes the confidant of the town's 'grotesques' -- solitary figures unable to communicate with others. George is their conduit for expression and solace from loneliness, but he has his own longings which eventually draw him away from home to seek a career in the city. He carries with him the dreams and unuttered words of remarkable characters such as Wing Biddlebaum, the disgraced former teacher, and the story-telling Doctor Parcival. In the perfectly imagined world of an archetypal small American town, Anderson reveals the hidden passions that turn ordinary lives into fonts of unforgettable emotions. Played out against the deceptively placid backdrop of Winesburg, Anderson's loosely connected stories coalesce, like chapters, into a powerful novel of love and loss. |

Free Today on Amazon UK - Rome Unbound: Whispers of Rebellion by Christopher Lee Buckner
'64 AD. It has been over a century since Caesar first landed on Britain’s shores. Now Rome has conquered the savage land, but civil unrest still prevails. Quintus Liberius Verus, a newly assigned centurion to the Ninth Legion, has been sent from Judea to take up a new post in Britain. A distinguished soldier, who rose from optio to centurian, achieving the prestigious rank of pilus prior for his work in the legion, he has decided he needs a change. Where better than the edge of the world to start anew? Britain, the mysterious island spoken of more in myth than reality, is still wild and untamed. Though Rome had come to these strange isles decades before – her legions spilling native blood, putting down revolts and building huge cities – the land is still savage and uncivilized. When Verus arrives, he realises the situation in Britain is unstable. The natives are still resentful of their captors – the embers of war are burning deep below the surface. Can Verus help keep the peace in these uncertain times? Or will he be powerless to stop the Whispers of Rebellion? , UK http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rome-Unbound...ndeavour+press US http://www.amazon.com/Rome-Unbound-C...ndeavour+press Au http://www.amazon.com.au/Rome-Unboun...ndeavour+press Can http://www.amazon.ca/Rome-Unbound-Ch...ndeavour+press |
