Unregistered Paperwhite - how to use Collections?
Hello everyone, I'm waiting for new Paperwhite to arrive and plan to use it Unregistered. From looking around, only problem with keeping Kindle out of curious eyes of amazon seems to be with collections.
Is there a way to create and manage collections by using Calibre or other software on never registered device? Thanks, Rona |

I don't have wifi and managed to use my paperwhite 2 unregistered for years, though I did have it 'registered' by Amazon in order to download their books and sideload them. However you can't use the Collections feature unless the device itself is registered.
An unregistered device also loses the ability to use other features such as Vocabulary Builder. I recently borrowed a friend's wifi and registered my kindle in order to use Collections. I suggest that you go ahead and register your kindle, then keep it in aeroplane mode. As long as you don't buy books from Amazon, they will have no way of knowing that you're reading terrible porn. Why are you worried about Amazon knowing what you're reading? I'm sure they have better things to do. Maybe wearing an aluminium hat would help Last edited by BookCat; 12-04-2018 at 07:53 AM. |

Calibre will let you create collections on most unregistered Kindle Models.

Kindle Collections plugin for Calibre is optional but very useful particularly if dealing with multiple tags per book. I do believe the plugin is still used in conjunction with LibrarianSync. Latest jailbreak: PW3 with firmware up to 5.9.6.1 PW4 with firmware up to 5.10.0.2 |

Thanks Frustrated Reader and ijovejedd for very useful info, I'll jailbreak it when it gets here and see if I can successfully create collections.
Bookcat, Amazon actually does know about your terrible (prefer not to know what sort exactly) porn regardless of where you buy your books. As for my reasons, I am not worried, merely annoyed and uninterested in having a mega corporation tracking every book I read, every note I take, and every paragraph that I highlight. |

They have no means to track you if your Kindle is not connected to internet. They're not telepathic, are they?

There was a great deal of levity in my post which the OP may have missed or chosen to ignore. Basically, keep the kindle in aeroplane mode, then it has no connection to the internet. Just connect it to your computer via usb to sideload books. (I wonder if Microsoft/Apple could track this . . . Time for that aluminium hat, methinks ) |

I guess levity was lost in between you calling me mentally unsound and a sexual degenerate.
While I will keep kindle in airplane mode, I'd like to keep it unregistered to avoid special offers commercials. Jailbreaking remains a solution, although not without risk so I'm on the fence. I wonder if books can be tagged by genre in Calibre and them sorted on kindle by using search function. |

Only if you use metadata plugboards to put a genre tag in the book title, for example "Death on the Nile (Historical Mystery)" or "Historical Mystery: Death on the Nile" or any other combination you want. Tags or genres won't show up on your Kindle unless they're included in the title.

I think that after a certain time after the last connection Kindle stops showing adds. At least my Paperwhite 1 did. But, I did a lot of other hacking to it, so it might have been a side-effect to some other activity. You can also try to use following trick to remove adds. [advert circumvention instructions deleted.] Last edited by pdurrant; 12-05-2018 at 09:20 AM. |

tag in title, yes that should work. I'll try it. Kacir, that is a nice trick. If I could avoid the ads, I'd sign up just for collections. I'll see if this works with newest PW model, if so, then I'll do it. I only wish we could have book cover as screensaver without Jailbreaking the device.

When it doesn't work to your satisfaction and you wish to return to the "out-of-the-box state", simply deregister the Kindle and reset it to factory defaults - as if you were trying to sell it. No need to jailbreak it at the moment. I would try the reset to factory defaults as one of first things, just to see that I can do it if I screw something up. |
