Marsh, Richard: The Joss: A Reversion. v1. 23 May 2021

Mary Blyth, a sales clerk who is robbed, nearly murdered, and then fired from her job, thinks her luck has changed when she inherits a dilapidated old house from a distant uncle, Benjamin Batters. But the rats, and the spirits that seem to haunt the house, are not her only concerns: a trio of grotesque and ruthless thugs will stop at nothing to gain entrance to the house and its secrets. A more frightening question arises: Is Benjamin Batters playing a murderous game from beyond the grave, or is he still alive?

The Joss can be read as a companion volume to Marsh’s most famous novel, The Beetle (1897), which in its time outsold even Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897).

===========
Richard Marsh (12 October 1857 – 9 August 1915) was the pseudonym of the English author born Richard Bernard Heldmann. One of the most popular and prolific authors of the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods, he is best known now for his supernatural thriller novel The Beetle. Marsh produced nearly 80 volumes of fiction and numerous short stories, in genres including horror, crime, romance and humour.
