Creating a manual with lots of images

Another newbie question:

Background: I'm converting a manual to ePub that contains a lot of images and diagrams targeted for the iBooks reader (iPad/iPhone). After reading these forums I"m still a bit confused what the best way to handle the images would be.

What image format/size/resolution is best for preserving the fine detail when the reader zooms in on the image?

Thanks in advance!

png or jpeg. Run some tests with each and see which is better...I don't think it matters much

With png the finished ePub is going to be very large, 230mb of just images, 130mb in jpg.

Is this going to present a performance issue?

Yes. If your market is solely iPad/iBooks, you could consider making an app though.

Yes.
Just think how long it took to transfer the file

Why not do what has been done before?

Break your book into logical sections, with the first Book, being the introduction and overall TOC, Index (be sure the section# is included if not obvious), whatever else makes sense.

Then make each section with it's own TOC, either duplicate the Index, glossary or cull them to be relevant to the section. Each section needs enough to be reasonably convenient, with out bloat that causes 'run-away size'

Both will present a performance issue. How many pixels in the jpg? If possible reduce them to 1 Meg pixel or less. Many eBook readers won't handle over 4 Mega pixel anyway. How many images are there?

Yes, the relevant question is how big each individual jpg is. I have a hard time believing that you'd want to use an image higher than 600x800 or 72 dpi or 150kb.

I have to wonder whether a PDF reader would handle images better. I frequently read 50mb PDFs in ipad Good Reader with little difficulty.
