Conan Doyle, Sir Arthur: Sherlock Holmes Omnibus. v11. 17th Dec 2011
"Sherlock Holmes Omnibus", containing the complete "Sherlock Holmes" stories (4 novels and 56 short stories) of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The contents are:
Novels:
Short story collections:
Enjoy! Edit: 20th Nov 2011. Uploaded v9. Major edit and re-arrangement of the book. All books within the omnibus are now presented in chronological order and, within the short story collections, the stories in "His Last Bow" and "The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes" have been re-arranged into publication order. Many illustrations have been re-scanned, and several missing ones added. "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box" has been restored from "His Last Bow" to its rightful place in "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" (it was omitted from the first English edition because it was felt to be too shocking at the time of original publication). At the same time, the introduction to "The Cardboard Box" which had been (badly) appended to the start of "The Resident Patient" has been removed, and the original Strand Magazine introduction restored. Many hundreds of errors have been corrected, and italics, missing accents, etc, restored. The formatting has been significantly improved (eg letters, newspaper quotes, etc, are now indented and in a smaller font). The result of all this is an immensely improved and much more error-free book. Edit: 21 Nov 11. Uploaded v10. A number of people reported typos in the previous upload, so I thought I'd better get them corrected immediately. I've also replaced the cover by one that's consistent with the cover style that I usually use. Uploaded v10. Edit: 17 Dec 11. Uploaded v11. A number of MR users have reported small errors, about a dozen in total. Fixed these, and created a new version. Many thanks for these error reports - please do let me know if you find any remaining errors; I'm sure there must still be some! What would be the "correct" reading order for these?

It's been a while since I read SH. I don't recommend them in chronological order. Instead, I suggest the following order:
1.A Study in Scarlet 2.The Sign of The Four 3. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes 4. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes - here I would stop when you finish the penultimate story and then read A Valley of Fear - and then read the last story of the Memoirs. 5. The rest of the short stories in the order that HarryT listed them. The last short novel, Hound of the Baskervilles, is very self contained, so I would read it anytime after number 1 and 2 on my list. Happy reading. Last edited by edercito; 12-29-2009 at 09:26 PM. |

Harry, are you still working on the illustrated stories? I have the one you posted back 01/09 and love the illustrations.

I am, but I'm afraid it's a rather "occasional" project.

Thanks again! So which version should I read to read in order? The Sherlock Holmes Omnibus, or the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes?

"The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" is a collection of short stories that you can find in the omnibus. The separate download you can find of the Adventures is an illustrated version.

Just out of curiosity, is Case-Book in the public domain in Canada? As far as I know, it's actually NOT in the public domain in the U.S. Kind of frustrating if one wants the complete set.

It *is* in the Public Domain in Canada (and everywhere but the U.S.?).
Strictly speaking, as a citizen of the United States, you should not be downloading this ebook. |

Strictly speaking, your citizenship is unimportant. What matters is your location: if you are in the US, you should not download it, even if you are a Canadian; but if you are in Canada, it's perfectly legal for you to download it, and carry it with you into the US if you like.

Many thanks for producing this epub, I will enjoy reading it.
Is it possible to have the table of contents modified to have the chapters in the various books appear as sub headings? I have a Kobo and can select the books under the TOC but cannot get to the chapters as the Kobo cannot navigate the links that you have at the start of each book.
