I disagree. It was a the PW5 at 6.8". That got more people reading on a larger then 6" screen which is a very good thing. 6" (IMHO) is dying.

Honestly the only ways I'd buy a new kindle is if all my kindles died or if there was a vaguely smartphone-sized kindle.

Me either. There's a reason I stick with the Claras. Too long of a line length distracts me. In the paper book days I disliked reading hardcovers or trade paperbacks for that reason.

Also, what is it with each new generation bragging about a brighter frontlight? At this point all that does is make the Kindle a more effective flashlight if used as one in a pinch.

That's stupidy by whoever is in charge of the Kobo line. There should be a Libra BW as well.

So according to the product page, “Its enhanced features include a 25% brighter front light at max setting, a higher contrast ratio, and faster page turns than the previous generation.”

We already knew about the brighter screen, but the higher contrast ratio is intriguing. It does point to an upgrade to a carta 1300 screen, however if I remember correctly the reviews of devices equipped with the carta 1300 did not show a significant difference with carta 1200 screens in terms of contrast; I’m curious whether Amazon actually managed to do better on that front. Also looks like it’s getting a faster CPU.

Overall it looks like a pretty decent update for the basic Kindle.

While the John Lewis site shows the 6" Kindle Basic 12th gen much the same as the earlier Spanish site, no sign of the Paperwhite 12th gen.
