Thumbs up Free (Kindle/Kobo/iTunes CA) Lost by M. Robotham [Australian Award-Win Psych Mystery]

Lost by Michael Robotham* (SYKM, Wikipedia) is the Australian-born author's prize-winning amnesiac psychological mystery/adventure thriller (one of them, at any rate, since he seems to have also gotten prize noms for even more that he's written in the same subgenre), free courtesy of publisher Hachette's Little, Brown Group division's Sphere imprint†, also published under the title of The Drowning Man, presumably for different market conditions that probably didn't want to make the Gentle Reader think that this was a tie-in to a then-popular TV series.

This won the 2005 Ned Kelly Award for Best Novel in the Crime Writing category, was a finalist for the 2006 Barry Award for Best British Crime Novel, and has its own (brief) Wikipedia page.

Currently free @ Amazon, Kobo, iTunes, & Google Play (all only available to Canadians, most likely).

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook alert thread of the day.

Enjoy!

Description
A lost child. A shattered past. A life going under…

Vincent Ruiz is lucky to be alive. A bullet in the leg, another through the hand, he is discovered clinging to a buoy in the River Thames, losing blood and consciousness fast. It takes six days for him to come out of his coma, and when he does, his nightmare is only just beginning. Because Vincent has no recollection of what happened, and nobody believes him.

A mile away from his body, a boat was found covered in blood — Vincent's and that of three others. Forensics say at least one of them must be dead. Vincent, a police detective, had signed his service pistol out of the station armoury, despite being on leave. Many murder suspects fake amnesia, and the investigating team are not sure this case is any different… The only clue is a picture in his pocket, a photograph of a young girl, Mickey Carlyle, who disappeared three years ago. And though Mickey is presumed dead, Vincent has the nagging doubt that she is alive and in terrible danger…

Please note: This title has also been published under the title The Drowning Man

* Incidentally, is anyone else parsing the author's last name as a kind of electronically-enhanced mechanical pork product?

† Ah, the joys of figuring out provenance amidst all these print houses' mergers/acquisitions. It's like a matryoshka doll. Or one of those motivational posters showing the big fish chasing the medium fish chasing the small fish.

No, because there was a family in our street with that surname. And Wikipedia tells me he grew up in my home town and is the right age to have been at school with my older brother. I'll have to ask my brother when when I next talk to him.

Of course, now I can't see it as anything other than "a kind of electronically-enhanced mechanical pork product".

Cool. If it turns out they did go to school together, then it's like having an Erdős number. Or Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, which is considerably easier to obtain.
