Orczy, Baroness: Lady Molly of Scotland Yard. v5. 4th Mar 2010
Best known as the creator of the daring Scarlet Pimpernel, The Baroness Orczy ought also to be remembered for bringing to life a trailblazing pair of detectives. One was the cranky Old Man in the Corner (available as a separate download in this forum), an early "armchair" sleuth. The other isn't at all sedentary (and is a lot more likable) - Lady Molly of Scotland Yard. Feisty, brilliant, and beautiful; precursor of the sleuth who relies on brains rather than brawn, Lady Molly, and her faithful sidekick and admiring chronicler Mary, began appearing in Orczy's entertaining stories years before the first Englishwoman did in fact become an officer of the law.
Enjoy! EDIT: 25 May 07 The book had the wrong language setting, and accented characters were not appearing correctly. Rebuilt to correct the problem and uploaded v2. EDIT: 15 Nov 07 Recreated the book with improved formatting and layout. Added a cover picture. Uploaded v3. EDIT: 4 Mar 10 Fixed HTML errors. Improved formatting. Corrected a number of errors. Added a new cover picture. Uploaded v5. Previous download count: 284 This work is assumed to be in the Life+70 public domain OR the copyright holder has given specific permission for distribution. I'm reading this and enjoying it immensely, but I do have one issue - some of the stories have a lot of French words and the accented vowels (I don't know what they're properly called) don't show up. I'm not sure if this is a BD issue or a failing of the reader itself. Still, I appreciate all the work you and others are doing to provide great content (haven't paid for a book in weeks )

just skip the french words, they are there to impress you, make you think the writer is a smart fellow, stick to the anglo-saxon and german words with a few latin ones for good luck, avoid freanch words and french fries

Wise advice as always, UncleDuke
HarryT, you'll find it most obvious in Chapter 6, A Castle in Brittany. |

Uploaded v2 which corrects the problem. Sorry about that! Thank you very much for reporting it - I'd much rather KNOW about these problems so I can fix them!

Are the accented words appearing OK for you now? It looks fine to me.

That's good. BD's a bit wierd in that respect. It defaults to setting the book language to "English" but then says to itself "English doesn't use accents, so I'd better replace all those funny letters by UNICODE character codes". If the book has any accented letters, you have to tell BD that the language of the book is French or German (or any other language that actually uses accents as standard) in order for them to show up! I try to do this as a part of the process of creating a book but occasionally, as in this case, forget .
