Neill, John R.: Lucky Bucky in Oz. v1. 23 Dec 2020

LUCKY BUCKY IN OZ 42
“Founded on and continuing the famous Oz stories by L. Frank Baum.”
By John R. Neill (1877–1943)

Bucky Jones is aboard a tugboat in New York Harbor when the boiler blows up. He is soon blown into the Nonestic Ocean where he meets Davy Jones, a wooden whale. The pair travel to the Emerald City, and have many watery adventures along the way.

=================
John Rea Neill (November 12, 1877 – September 19, 1943) was a magazine and children’s book illustrator primarily known for illustrating more than forty stories set in the Land of Oz, including L. Frank Baum’s, Ruth Plumly Thompson’s, and three of his own. His pen-and-ink drawings have become identified almost exclusively with the Oz series. He also did a great deal of illustration work for other children’s books and magazines and newspapers, which is not as well known today.

The Wonder City of Oz, The Scalawagons of Oz, and Lucky Bucky in Oz, which debuted each year from 1940 to 1942, are considered part of the “Famous Forty.” Neill’s vision of Oz is more manic than Thompson or Baum’s. Houses often get up and do battle, and everything can be alive. His entries take Oz’s color scheme (blue for Munchkin Country, red for Quadling Country, etc.) to an extreme, extending to sky and skin colors.
