Also, @dasmeer, you didn’t have to go to demo mode to check the version.

Version can be checked whenever first time you can connect Kindle to PC.

Did my instructions say otherwise?
Please show me which post exactly you were referring to. I can fix it if it is wrong

Sorry you had such troubles anyway

np, thank you for being ready to help, I started to follow https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=484
step 1 didn't work - no such file, I'd recommend users use ;711 to check the version in this case, if I knew it I wouldn't go to demo mode at all

MTP doesn't expose hidden "system" folder, IIRC.
So my guess is that @mergen3107's instructions were written for Scribe 1st gen on early firmware build that predates it switching to using MTP protocol to export the storage space over USB cable.

The system folder is in fact accessible on the Scribe with MTP; it's not visible but can be reached by adding "\system" to the path.

It is however not exposed at all on the Colorsoft. As far as I know this is the only Kindle (so far) explicitly preventing access to the system folder.

Good info to know
One more reason never to buy Kindle models using MTP
Is ColorSoft still the only Kindle on firmware 5.18.x?

tried "\system" to the path - didn't work, and I got all hidden folders in totalcommander

1) No version.txt file? This is so weird! Never seen this before.
2) Yes, this is true that I wrote instructions when I had Scribe on non-MTP FW. However, the FW in question ended up being 5.16.2 (so, non-MTP anyway), so I don’t know what’s wrong here…
3) My current Scribe1 FW 5.17.2 with MTP still allows me to add \system in path (in Windows 10/11 File Explorer). However, the system folder is also just visible in plain sight Colorsoft must be on 5.18.x, so we will see what changes when such FW ships to Scribe.
