Replacement of old Kindle
Hi everyone,
I am looking for e-book reader, which I could replace my old Kindle 3G (keyboard). After nearly 6 years my old reader is stopping to work. So I am trying to search for some convinient replacement. Fortunately I am not bind to Amazon by many books from Amazon store as I have copy of them in epub format. Also I have spend a lot of time to organize my huge library in Calibre so I would like to use it even with new model (I have books in epub and converted to mobi with pictures). As I am daily traveling by underground where is no connection signal all books needs to be placed on device, also I am not really fan of being on Wi-fi 24/7. To summarize it here is what I am searching for: Required
Other optional features/parametrs
What I really don't care about
Please note that I am from Europe. Does anyone have reader to recommend? |

Your requirement for physical buttons severely restricts your choice. If you'd be willing to drop that requirement, you'd have a far wider range of devices available.

Why not go for a Kindle Voyage?

I understand that the HW buttons are serious restriction.
Let's say that for first round to get candidates I'll change this requirement from Required to Recommended. But in general there is one thing I don't really want to turn pages by touching screen, so the touch sensors for buttons are kind of acceptable, but I am here worried about their responsiveness, which is something I did not need to worry about on my old device. Also when you are mentioning Kindle Voyage, what about Kindle Oasis? (even though I am little bit concerned about its cover holding only on magnets). |

Forget the Oasis. It's a poor design and it's way too overpriced. The Voyage has much better hardware.

Yeah, I don't think the Oasis is poorly designed at all. But I do think that the design doesn't justify the price over the equally nice Voyage.
There are several Android based e-readers that would meet all your requirements, including page turn buttons. The Icarus Illumina line for instance. I don't have first hand experience with any of these devices, since in the US they are rarer than hen's teeth. But might be worth looking into. |

I agree with HarryT and Ciniajoy--sounds like the Voyage is a good choice for you. I've had the Voyage for quite a while now, and like HarryT, I really like the page turn sensors. They work well for me. Once I got used to them (didn't take very long at all), I like the sensors better than physical buttons for turning pages.
I also have a Kobo Aura One, which I really like as well, but when I'm reading on it I find myself wishing that it had the page turn sensors of the Voyage. If it had those, I'd consider it the perfect device for me. |

I don't know in which country you are, but it might be possible to see ereaders in store. I believe some chains in Germany have solid choice, like kindles, kobos and tolino.

I had a Kindle Keyboard when I got my Kindle Touch, the first one with a touchscreen and no page turn buttons. I was convinced I'd hate it and sure enough, I did. At the end of a week I was thinking of returning it but I decided to give it a more serious try. I put my KK away and read only on the Touch for a week. Then I got the Kindle Keyboard out again to read with it and compare. The thing wouldn't turn the page no matter how much I swiped it and it got so irritating I sold it. ![]() I've been swiping ever since. Barry |

In Europe, 300dpi readers with physical buttons include the Pocketbook Touch HD and the Cybook Muse HD. I have no experience at all of Cybook readers. I have the Pocketbook and I think it is a very good reader, though definitely improved further by installing the CoolReader-Pocketbook fork.
On the Android front, at 300dpi one might find the Onyx Boox Kepler Pro and the C67MLCarta2. Battery life may be less on Android readers. User posts of experience of both these readers can be found on this site. |

If you like to have your books organized in the reader, apart from Android readers (with Android applications to organize your books) Kobo readers integrate well with Calibre, so you can use Calibre plugins to automatically organize your books in collections. I also like being able to have the cover of the book I'm reading as sleep cover in the reader, although that probably won't be important to you coming from a Kindle.
