Weird behavior while charging - Kobo Libra 2

I have installed the latest firmware 4.38.23038 and installed the adequate patches and Nickel Menu.

I was always wondering, why my Libra 2 doesn't charge up to 100%. It gets stuck at round about 84 - 87% and stopps charging.

I have another Libra 2....it was the same....and was excactly the same firmware and patches as my other Libra 2.

Then I did a full reset of one of my Libra 2 readers.....with the result that it chages perfectly up to 100% without any issues.

Now, I consider it has to do with the tweaks and patches. Has anyoone an idea what could that be?

Update 22nd Oct 24: I found out, it has nothing to do with the patches. See my post #7.

Kobo's code for the battery meter is nonsense and has little to do with reality. You can use my battery statistics script to get slightly more reliable information:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...postcount=1397

but it's by no means perfect since we're relying on sysfs.

The behavior I described has nothing to do with the metering system of Kobo Readers. It has to do with impact of patches. If I configure a completley plain reader without any patches or tweaks installed, the reader will charge normally - up to 100%.
As soon I have patched it, the charging will not complete and stopp at round about 84%. I have tested this with two Kobo Libra 2.
The result of this observation is, that I will not do any patching anymore.

How it should work
  • The battery is charged to 80%
  • I connect the reader with USB-C-cable and a charger.
  • I can see, the battery is charging
  • The sleeve is closed, the reader on StandBy-Mode
  • When I open the sleeve later on, I can see it's still charging
  • The reader will charge up to 100%

What is with patched devices
  • The battery is charged to 80%
  • I connect the reader with USB-C-cable and a charger.
  • I can see, the battery is charging
  • The sleeve is closed, the reader on StandBy-Mode
  • When I open the sleeve later on, I can see, it has stopped charging
  • The reader will not charge above 84%

This is at least my experience I have made.

Which patches do you have installed? Have you tried removing one at a time until the battery meter starts working again? Alternately, start with one patch or tweak and add one at a time until you break your battery meter. Saying "I've installed adequate patches" tells us exactly nothing about what patches you have installed.

Ok, it has nothing to do with the patches. It is a weird behavior of the Kobo Libra 2. An upatched Libra 2 also did stopp charging. I do not have this issue with a Kobo Aura One. Maybe a firmware update can fix this.

Update 23.10.24...it's not a bug, it's a feature!?
Maybe Kobo has developed an intelligent charging system to protect the battery. Who knows? I've had a chat with the Kobo Support. The only thing they can do is asking a lot of questions: Did you try another USB-Cable? Did you try another charger? Did you factory reset your reader? Bla bla....technical "support" is mostly waste of time. It has nothing to do with cables, chargers or whatever. It is simply the firmware of the Kobo Libra 2.

Meanwhile I know the issue is related to my two Libra 2 models. I returned the latest Libra 2 (has guarantee) and got a refurbished one from Kobo - no issues at all.

A common knowledge about rechargeable batteries (e.g. Lithium-iontypes) says that their lifespan propably last longer when they start to get recharged at 15%~20% and stop being charged at 80%~85%, instead of at completely drained or at level 100%, respectively.
On cellphones, this practice is named 'battery protection', or 'battery saver', or whatever. When activated, the phone re-calibrates its battery level display. In the other words, 15% becomes the new 0% and 80% is the new 100%, for example.
According to your observation, kobo may not re-calibrate at all.
