KOReader + Calibre (https and password)

Hi, I've performed a fresh install of KOReader on my Kobo Glo HD. The software is really impressive, congrats !

Howerver, I planed to connect to my Calibre Content Server (on my NAS). The server works nice : I can connect from a browser or in OPDS using Android apps. The server has to be available from WAN so insecure http is not an option, not to mention no password. The server is properly configured in https with a user/password.

I've first tried to connect to a wireless Calibre but without success : I cannot setup a username. Is there a syntax to setup a username and a password ? I've tried the usual userasswd in the password field, and also https://user@calibre.myserveradress.me in the adress field, without success.

So I've backtracked on OPDS but it doesn't work either. With OPDS, I've set :
The server beeing fine, how can I setup a distant and secure connection to my Calibre library ?

Thanks, these are bad news. Since 2014, didn't anybody put in the legwork ? And is it only about the direct "calibre" connection, or as well about the OPDS thing ?

Any and all HTTP interactions.

(And to answer your question: yes, most of us are on the same network as our calibre instance, so the point is moot, making this very very low priority).

(Also, most of the active devs don't actually use calibre at all, IIRC ;D).

I've been using OPDS with KOReader through reverse proxy without issues, with authentication set to basic like mentioned in pazos' link. Did you try that?

I never let any distant connection happen without TSL/SSL.

What I want is to "replace" my Kobo shop by my distant Calibre library while I'm on the go (and forgot to add books at home). The KoReader reading enhancements would have been a welcome addon, but not my primary need. So I just think that KOReader is actually not for me and I'll uninstall.

Any idea of a sowtfare adressing my needs ?

Nono, setting the auth method to basic just means that calibre handles your credentials in plain text and lets your reverse proxy handle the encryption, It doesn't disable SSL altogether. Or am I wrong to assume you use a reverse proxy?

@temperdu: IIRC, some of the custom calibre OPDS/content-server implementations were playing with actually emulating the Nickel sync protocol to point to a calibre instance instead, but I haven't followed their progress in a while.

(I think this was pioneered in calibre-web?).

Sorry for the delay. And about my configuration, I'm indeed using a reverse proxy. For some reason, I was thinking that "basic" means no password, hence my reluctance. I was wrong and I'll try again with basic auth.

I won't try to connect to Calibre directly because KReader doesn't let the user set a username (only a password). So I've tried with OPDS, again without success.

The error I actually seems not to be related to auth. The error is : "Cannot get catalog info from http://https://calibre.mydomain:443/opds" when I setup the OPDS server with "https://" in the begining (KoReader adds an other "http://" prefix) ; and it is "Catalog not found" when I don't put the "https://". Note that the "https://calibre.mydomain.me:443/opds" works correctly (I get an XML file).

I'm curious about how you setup things, @Mars95.

My mistake again : it works with OPDS. I did try to setup using the "Local calibre library" in the OPDS Catalog menu. With the "+" button, I've been able to setup the OPDS properly. Thanks.

Just to make sure, OPDS is the only option through a reverseproxy routing https to http, and password protection, right ? There is no obscure way to let a proper "Calibre" connection work, right ?

As far as Calibre Wireless is concerned, that's a custom protocol over TCP, so there might be some routing shenanigans involved, because HTTP *never* enters the equation. (The default port is either 9090 or automatic, but it's configurable in the startup popup in Calibre).

There's also broadcast sweeping over UDP involved for discovery, but I assume we skip that if you feed an IP:port pair manually.

It doesn't make sense because you're expected to do stuff from calibre itself. Unless you do VNC or similar to your computer to manage calibre. But that sounds a bit inconvenient.

I think Calibre Companion has gone through some complicated / controversial changes in the last year or so, but my favorite workflow on my Boox device is to just handle all of the library stuff in Calibre Companion and use that as a launcher to open an EPUB in KOReader. That way I don't have to worry about getting KOReader to connect to my Calibre server, etc.
