I've just started reading M&M - have no idea where it's taking me - but it's keeping my interest.

About 12 chapters in and I'm still not sure where it's taking me.

The introduction is 12 pages long! I got bored with it after 5. I'm moving on to the story now. I'm hoping I'll enjoy the story enough to make me want to go back to the into.

Now 14 chapters in and I still don't really understand what's going on. But... The writing is amazingly good and my only advice would be to try and stick with it. And look at some of the links provided by Ea and Hoyt Clagwell. I have a better understanding of some the allusions and references because of them.

I gave up on the introduction, too. It's probably more intersting once one have read the book. The book itself is great. Yesterday I read four chapters and I can't wait to find out what will happen next (been busy all day).

In my edition, Richard Peavar wrote a useful introduction, about Bulgakov, and about the development of the book.

Bulgakov started as a play writer, a man of theater. It shows in how he introduces the characters, visually. Great descriptions of key elements.

The development of the novel, that in its completed form is complex, was rather simple in its founding.

You're right - the way characters are introduced does seem like it's done to help stage a play.
