LINE Webtoon and Patreon team up to invest up to $3,600,000 in webcomics

If you are a web comics creator, this is probably a dream come true.

LINE webtoons are very successful in South Korea (employing hundreds of full-time creators) and now they are looking to duplicate that in the English market.

The massively successful global webcomics portal LINE Webtoon and crowdfunding site Patreon are teaming up tp help fund more webcomics in several innovative ways, it was announced today. A Patreon button has has integrated directly into comics on the “Discover” portion of the LINE Webtoon site. The Discover section is an open portal where webcomickers can directly upload their comics and potentially reach LINE Webtoon’s 10 million unique daily readers and 35 million unique monthly readers.

But more than that, LINE Webtoon is poised to pledge up to $3,600,000 to cartoonists who use their Discover portal and tie in to Patreon via “patronage investment program.”

Webtoon x Patreon for Monetization on Discover

Webtoon is teaming up with Patreon to bring all Discover creators a new investment program and integration. Starting today, creators will have the option to link their Patreon accounts to their comics on Webtoon and let readers pledge directly for ongoing support, and on top of it, LINE Webtoon will additionally pledge up to $1,000 per month per qualifying creators for a year as outlined below.

Both Patreon and Webtoon are creator-friendly platforms dedicated to fostering new talent and helping creators monetize their work in the digital realm, while still granting creators full ownership of their own IP.

WEBTOON's Pledge to Discover x Patreon Creators for May

Dear Creators on Discover,

We are happy to announce Discover x Patreon Creators who were qualified for Webtoon's Direct Pledge in May.

The following ​177​ creators should have received direct pledge from Webtoon for their Discover uploads in May.

Many of the 177 "Discover" creators got $1000 for the month of May 2017.
Some of the best "Discover" webtoons are promoted monthly into "Featured" where they will receive a monthly salary.

webtoons.com is owned by Naver (Korean's biggest search engine) and LINE (the #1 messaging app in Japan) so they can afford it.

It looks like there are no ads yet on the webtoons site so they are running this at a huge financial loss for them. Probably trying to expand market share first. The Naver webtoon portal in South Korea relies on ads to make money (readers read free) so I'm surprised they haven't launch ads yet for the English version 2 years after its debut.
