To be clear...prior to my screwup and "upgrade" to the 2019 dictionary, my normal "English" dictionary had the etymology descriptions. I did not have a "Custom" dictionary.

Now, after my factory reset, the "English" dictionary says 2024 at the bottom, and the "English (Custom) dictionary -- from the first page of this post -- does not have a date and neither one has the etymology.

I guess my point is that the 2019 version does NOT have the etymology sections as someone had stated above. At least, not what can be downloaded from this post.

I was hoping that someone who has a..normal?...English dictionary that HAS the etymology could share the link where they got it.

Sadly, I don't have backups.

EDIT: Wow. I like the Wikititionary version. I replaced the "English" dictionary instead of using it as the "Custom" and it's working almost as well as what I used yesterday.

It's odd to see the etymology on top rather than the end, but I'm ok with that.

It's updated bimonthly (around the 5th and 25th) with more definitions being added.

And if you've managed to recover the 2019 ODE, perhaps you could drop it into the custom-dict folder so that a future update does not overwrite it?

That link still worked but was to the older version (v2??) of the ODE. I modified the link to add the v3 so it now gets the 2024 version.

Anyone else who sees this message, I updated all the links that were not already pointing to the v3 versions to do so but this likely means that the dictionary version does not match the description.

FYI. I just got my Clara BW today and dumped a bunch of books in it after all the updates.

The Oxford it updated to is the 2024 version, with no etymological references. Can I assume that's the version the link is for?

Yes, Kobo has updated the dictionary downloads, so the only way to have the 2019 version is to have an older Kobo that hasn't been online since the dictionary update was made.

I've upgraded to the new Oxford 2024 version and saved (in custom-dict) the 2019 version.
It seemed that Kobo did went for a cheaper dict version: not only the entymology is missing (and sadly missed), but I also already encountered several words which are missing in the new 2024 version but *are* present in the old 2019 version.
Well, I did too add the wikitionary (@xyclonei: great find ), so all in all I'm reasonable happy.

You do not need to add the (Custom). This is automatically added to the name of dictionaries in the custom dictionary folder. The name of the dictionary is generated from the file name (dicthml.zip is English, dicthtml-de.zip is German, dicthmtl-de-en.zip is German-English for example).

Well I will leave it as it is, as I know this particular name works on my Kobo.

I am revelling in having the 2019 version back. It's so much fuller and richer, not just the etymology, but also derivatives and contextual information, plus the use of bold and italics to distinguish between parts of the entry.

The only thing that makes sense in my mind for the 2024 version is that they wanted to prioritise non native English speakers who have reached a level of fluency to use an English-English dictionary but who just want a plain no frills definition of a word.

Nothing I've seen, if anything there are fewer entries in the 2024 one.
