Albert Bigelow Paine was an American author and biographer best known for his work with Mark Twain. He wrote in several genres, including fiction, humor, and verse, for children and adults. His most notable work was a three-volume biography of Mark Twain.

While returning to the city at summer’s end, young Frank gives his lucky piece as payment to a girl selling berries by the roadside. Years pass, and a story unfolds involving two young women and two young men. A taste of adventure, a bit of romance, a touch of mystery, a soupçon of melodrama – there are many flavors to be found in this novel of the early 1900’s. There’s even a pinch of mycology (that’s the study of mushrooms, to you and me).
