Since this new one they want to pass doesn't actually abridge the freedom of speech, but only the freedom of streaming, the above mentioned piece of paper does not apply. As always whenever corporations with lots of money want something legislated. (Yes, there was lots of sarcasm there. The "land of the free", my foot. The land of whoever has the most funds, more like.) |

...and when this act fails to stop piracy, the media industries will lobby for even more control.

Congress can pass any law they want to. But thent eh courts will decide whether or not it is allowed.
And many times Congress (or state legislatures) ahve passed laws that are clearly in violation of the constitution. |

Yeah, but sometimes it will be years or even decades before a law is overturned in court.

Disgraceful and doomed to failure. It will be yet one more bad law if it gets through. It ranks right up there with the man with the red flag being required to walk in front of those newfangled horseless carriages. A longstanding and profitable business model has become obsolete, and the vested interests struggle to preserve it. No matter what the cost!

microsoft as well as google are against it. i think this bill will quietly die because those companies have far more pull than hollywood or the recording industry these days.

^ Unfortunately the pharmaceuticals are also lobbying for this bill. They want to stop people from getting their drugs for less from international sources.

If it the law passes and is signed, I wouldn't be surprised to see a surge in inexpensive, encrypted, anonymized VPN services. |

When the Internet falls apart, that'll be a clear indicator that it has passed. Beyond that I'm not sure.
