Flaubert, Gustave: Solammbo. v1, 7 Oct 2017

Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) was an influential French novelist, and the leading exponent of literary realism in his country. He was known for his scrupulous devotion to style and aesthetics, and was a mentor of Guy de Maupassant.

There is some ambiguity about the translator's name. The title page of the 1913 edition contains J.C. Chartres as the translator, while WorldCat.org has John Smith Chartres (1862-1927) as the translator.

Solammbô was first published in 1862, and is a historical novel set around Carthage after the first Punic War during the Mercenary revolt.

The source text was taken from the University of Adelaide ebook library, and checked against the 1913 J.M. Dent & Sons edition in the Internet Archive. I have omitted the Introduction and the Appendix, and have silently corrected typos, curled quotation marks, restored italics and diacritics, and made changes to spelling, punctuation, and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com.
