Furthermore (I couldn't edit my comment for some reason), the original list provided the valuable information of whether it was available on Kindle. Yours did not, probably because the idea of making your list useful didn't appeal to your ego-gratification drive. In other words, it would have involved actual work.

What traditionally has made a book great is not its plot but the richness of its characters, its insights into history, society, or human nature, and the distinctiveness of the writing style.
To quote Raymond Chandler:
"some very dull books have been written about God, and some very fine ones about how to make a living and stay fairly honest. It is always a matter of who writes the stuff, and what he has in him to write it with...Everything written with vitality expresses that vitality: there are no dull subjects, only dull minds."

All of the pre-1923 books on that list can be had for free at Project Gutenberg and Mobileread. A dollar may be cheap, but they tend to add up over time.

Raymond's quote is self-defeating. P and P is held in high regard mainly by people who are Anglo-American centric. P and P has very little historical insight, and portrays near nobility as the suffering without even glancing at the servants who whose income was made by serving egotistical upper middle class people. The language and characters are fascinating, while the plot resembles that of a romantic movie, a chick flick.

P and P doesn't come within 50 spots of masterpieces like Crime and Punishment, or Brothers Karamazov
