DX Folder Utopia

Many of us know of course that the DX is frankly abysmal when it comes to organizing one's eBooks. In an ideal world, one would assume that Amazon is by now aware of the widespread frustration about this. Yet little is known about how Amazon might pursue this, if of course they ever get round to doing so. Any news on this would be welcome.

On a more proactive note, sometimes it's good to have an idea of what people want rather than to focus on what isn't delivering. As a PR-505 user too, I find it has a well thought out intuitive system for organizing files. Perhaps there are better folder management systems out there on other eReaders?

Please share your thoughts and experiences! I mean, if there's one place where Amazon could learn a few lessons from informed users, mobileread.com would surely be one very rational place to start!

People have been clamoring for folders since the K1. I don't think Amazon really cares all that much.

maybe they don't have folders because if they did it would be harder to delete books on the kindle remotely...a la 1984.

They've already said they aren't going to continue doing that but it I suppose it could make a difference in some legitimate content management scenarios such as deleting for a customer-initiated return, deleting back issues of periodicals, snyching bookmarks and notes. I wouldn't think it would be that big of a deal, though. The K1 allowed you to move files between internal memory and the SD card so it already had to track file locations. They're might be a bit of extra jiggery pokery to keep the related bookmarks, clippings and annotation files straight. Even if they didn't want to bother with that, tags should be doable. Heck, we already have people using their annotations to make tags.

I'm not sure about the Big Brother conspiracy. Rather, it's all about money in this land of milking honey. Yet even that doesn't quite explain it. In any case, clearly, if Amazon doesn't get its act right soon, a rival eReader is likely to render the Kindle obsolete.

Perhaps SalvaG's underground approach is the way forward though I'm way out of my league here.

BTW, I was wondering that if folder management were to be incorporated, folders would ideally appear at the top alongside Personal Docs, Subscriptions, Book etc. If ever that hurdle is got over, I guess PDF navigation would be a strong second priority.

Unlikely, remote book management uses book IDs, not paths in filesystem.

SalvaG, as I said earlier I'm way out of my league here, but could you please identify the specific tasks that you need help on. Maybe we could help to pull together the appropriate expertise.

The Kindle 2 and DX both support putting your books into folders just fine, they just dont have a UI that allows you to browse by folders. The reason they left that out is almost certainly for UI simplicity (I doubt they care very much about the needs of power users).
