In Search of God: The God of Spirituality
Religions and prophets have been preaching about God for centuries, and millions of people have developed faith in their concept. The revolution of science and technology in this century has forced many of us to reevaluate the doctrines and tenets received through our religious traditions. Should we believe in creation or should we believe in evolution? Should we believe in heaven and His court of justice when we look up in the sky or should we believe in the space, the planets, the stars, and the galaxies up there? I hope this write-up will provide a fresh insight into the mysteries about God -- and leave us wiser, peaceful, and enlightened God and spirit is no more another worldly belief in fate, luck, chance, or coincidence. For the new generation of 21st century, we should be able to make sense of the real world, find peace in the midst of turmoil, and discover hope and joy. The God is not in church or mosque or temple only that appears every Sunday. God is also not sitting somewhere in the sky watching our actions. The God is in us 24-hours a day. “If we can’t see God in all, we can’t see God at all.” We need scriptures that can teach us all humans are capable of achieving union with God while still alive by realizing the Divine within. We want to become one with God and experience it. This book will lead us towards spiritual meditation and permanent peace; representing the best that East and West have to offer since the author is educated at Yale University in the West and Punjab University in the East. The reader will understand the concept of God, which constitutes the spiritual basis of living. This understanding will lead us to love and happiness irrespective of our faith. |

I think of evolution as explaining how a species changes over time (wolf to dog for example) but the theory doesn't explain where the wolf itself (that the dog evolved from) came from in the first place. Science rather than disproving the existence of God rather seems to reinforce the idea that he does in fact exist. Plant life points to the existence of water in what looks to be barren desert, but it doesn't explain how the water itself came to exist.

I enjoy your philosophical points. But there is one universal truth or ultimate truth that in Eastern religions can be called God. [We are not talking about personal truth. Because your perception of truth and my perception of truth can vary, as you know] Truth cannot contradict itself. Truth from science and truth from God/Religion must eventually converge into one grand whole, a unified knowledge of the laws that govern our universe. Those who fight over superiority of one over the other are blinded by ignorance about both. Thanks. |

Truth is, that is one thing I can't dispute. It simply is what it is. Darwin didn't explain where life came from though. He explained that over time one form could evolve into multiple different forms in different parts of the world depending on the environment they were found in. So you have the basic form of beetle for example but with variations in size, color and other attributes. Of course in his day even suggesting that the forms of animate life that were to be found hadn't all been there at the creation was a shocking idea. And many scientists today do find as they have probed deeper and deeper into physics and other branches of science that they can't explain how things came to be without a supernatural event taking place. I read an interesting piece the other day that pointed out for example that matter isn't solid, being made from atoms which themselves have very little substance and then the author pointed out that the Bible says God made the world from nothing. In any event the argument of science vs. religion has gone on for centuries and I imagine (Mr. Camping not withstanding) will continue for quite a while yet. Modern English Bibles state that it took 7 days to create everything, but the original Hebrew I understand uses the term era's which implies a bit more time. In any event I do agree that science and religion will have to meet somewhere along the line.

Darwin wrote On the Origin of Species 150 years ago. The science didn't stop with the writings of Darwin. And complaining that evolutionary theory doesn't explain origins is akin to complaining that an auto repair handbook doesn't explain iron ore strip mining. The origin of life is a different scientific discipline called abiogenesis.
In the interest in not derailing this thread any further, there are several threads on evolution in the politics and religion forum, if you wish to continue. Quote:

This reminds me a quote from A. Einstein: “Religion without science is blind. Science without religion is lame.” Albert Einstein I enjoyed both points of view as these represent search for truth from different angels. I have to go now, but may come later if the discussion continues. Thanks. |
