59 on the Goodreads list. I don't like that they include books in a series as a seperate book. On one hand, it is more accurate, on the other hand most people read a complete series. I guess I would prefer something like listing the series and letting people decide what reading it means.
There are several that I didn't count because I had only seen the movie. |

Well I've read about 25 on the Amazon list and 45 on the Goodreads list. The Amazon list is a very odd mix. It includes several I did not finish or don't ever plan to read. On the other hand it also includes several books that I've bought and are on my TBR list. Maybe that just means they were successful at capturing a broad appeal, and the intent is just to spur more sales of popular-selling books. Usually I like the Amazon lists but not so much this one! The Goodreads list is more appealing to me.

As above this list is quite odd, and left me feeling distinctly meh.

I've read 32 of the Amazon list with a couple more that are on my TBR list near term. I was surprised at how well I had covered those for children. A good portion of those not read will never be read by me unless there is some compensation involved.

18 on the Amazon list (probably; there are a few I really can't remember but I am not counting anything I'm not completely sure about) and 35 on the Goodreads top 100.
Both lists seem quite heavily skewed towards books originally written in English, as usual with such lists, and both have books I would only read if someone paid me a considerable amount of money to do so. |

I've read 14 on the Amazon list, and 3 are on my TBR list. 37 on the Goodreads list.
I can't believe that they would list a book by a sloshing drunk (Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain) over ANYTHING by Julia Child. Last edited by Tarana; 02-05-2014 at 11:26 PM. |

18 on the Amazon list. 31 on the Goodreads list.
Many on both lists I can't imagine ever reading. Last edited by pdurrant; 02-05-2014 at 05:44 PM. |

I've read 27 on Amazon's list. I've also read a few other titles by the authors listed rather than the book they chose for the list. I was surprised to find that many and even more surprised to find another 10 of the titles that I've bought to read or are on my library hold/wishlist.

I've read 23 of the Amazon picks. These choices seem very skewed towards more recent titles, and titles originally written in English.

No Virgil, Homer, Shakespeare, Dickens, Verne or Melville?

Three of these authors didn't write in English (and Homer likely didn't write per se) and all of them wrote more than 30 years ago, so no, by the Amazon list's logic they must not be essential reading.

34 on the Amazon list; 55 on the Goodreads list. The Amazon list was strange.

Also, sorry I discovered that Dickens was on the list. The announcement I read didn't state that the books had to be written in English, but I guess they need to be available in English. Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote in Spanish as an example. |
