I thought the book was OK (when I read it decades ago). All but a big chunk of the end, of course. The way-too-long and pointless stream of consciousness nonsense was as annoying as the movie's half-hour long hallucinogenic, first-person-shooter roller-coaster ride that correlated with it.

Yes. The first-person-shooter was referring to the movie not the book. And it does match the "Star Gate" section of the book. Regardless of the book's POV, both mediums' treatment of that event were overly long and monotonous.

It doesn't demonstrate that science fiction promotes poorer reading, it just demonstrates that some people's prejudices against science fiction lead them to poorer reading. If you're reading sloppily because of you're prejudices, that's on you, not on the material.
