Dead Lions is the second in the much nominated/awarded Slough House series by Mick Herron. I hadn't really noticed this series before (although the first in the series, Slow Horses, must have been free or really really cheap before since I have it) - it looks sort of interesting. Anyway, Horses has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Dead-Lions-Sl...dp/B008ADFIKQ/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/dead-lions

Spoiler:
Quote:
The CWA Gold Dagger Award-winning British espionage novel about disgraced MI5 agents who inadvertently uncover a deadly Cold War-era legacy of sleeper cells and mythic super spies.

The disgruntled agents of Slough House, the MI5 branch where washed-up spies are sent to finish their failed careers on desk duty, are called into action to protect a visiting Russian oligarch whom MI5 hopes to recruit to British intelligence. While two agents are dispatched on that babysitting job, though, an old Cold War-era spy named Dickie Bow is found dead, ostensibly of a heart attack, on a bus outside of Oxford, far from his usual haunts.

But the head of Slough House, the irascible Jackson Lamb, is convinced Dickie Bow was murdered. As the agents dig into their fallen comrade's circumstances, they uncover a shadowy tangle of ancient Cold War secrets that seem to lead back to a man named Alexander Popov, who is either a Soviet bogeyman or the most dangerous man in the world. How many more people will have to die to keep those secrets buried?

The Infidel Stain, apa The Printer’s Coffin, is the second in the Blake and Avery series by MJ Carter. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Blake and Avery investigate a serial killer stalking the streets of London in this stunning sequel to M. J. Carter’s lauded fiction debut, The Strangler Vine.

London, 1841. Returned from their adventures in India, Jeremiah Blake and William Avery have both had their difficulties adapting to life in Victorian England. Moreover, time and distance have weakened the close bond between them, forged in the jungles of India. Then a shocking series of murders in the world of London’s gutter press forces them back together.

The police seem mysteriously unwilling to investigate, then connections emerge between the murdered men and the growing and unpredictable movement demanding the right to vote for all. In the back streets of Drury Lane, among criminals, whores, pornographers, and missionaries, Blake and Avery must race against time to find the culprit before he kills again.

But what if the murderer is being protected by some of the highest powers in the land?

The Ape Who Guards the Balance is the 10th in the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Ape-Who-Guard...dp/B000FC10NY/

Quote:
After eluding a kidnapper in London, an unperturbed Amelia Peabody accompanies her unconventional family to Cairo once more—only to be ensnared almost immediately in a web of stolen treasures and bloodthirsty cults. Villainy is running rampant in Egypt this 1907 archaeological season, but the members of the intrepid Peabody-Emerson clan have already proven themselves to be formidable adversaries. However, when a mint-condition papyrus of the Book of the Dead falls into their hands, and the corpse of an unscrupulous dealer in stolen antiquities is found floating in the Nile, the Emersons' prospects for surviving this excavation season unscathed appear increasingly dim.

The third through tenth titles in the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series by Anne Perry have dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US. For the moment, at least, not on sale at Kobo US. The link includes a few strays - a couple of Anne Perry titles from other series, and some other strays towards the end. I'm in a hurry and don't have time to clean it up, but the Pitt titles are all near the top, at least for me...

The Paris Affair is a title in the Malcolm & Suzanne Rannoch series (which is also the Charles and Mélanie Fraser series) by Tracy (pen name Teresa) Grant. If this sounds confusing, it is - Grant does not write the series in chronological order, and the names of the main protagonists changed at one point due to some publishing issues.

I tried to explain this a little bit more in this previous post, which also contains a link to Grant's website, which does even more explaining. In spite of the effort it takes to keep things straight, I've read and enjoyed most of the titles in this series.

In any case, Affair has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Paris-Affair-...dp/B07BRXLY73/

Spoiler:
Quote:
British spies Malcolm and Suzanne Rannoch race to find a missing child in this “thrilling” historical mystery set during the end of the Napoleonic Wars (Deanna Raybourn, New York Times–bestselling author).

In the wake of the Battle of Waterloo, Paris is a house divided. The triumphant Bourbons flaunt their victory with lavish parties, while Bonapartists seek revenge only to be captured and executed. Amid the turmoil, British attaché and intelligence agent Malcolm Rannoch and his wife, Suzanne, discover that his murdered half-sister, Princess Tatiana Kirsanova, may have covertly borne a child—and Malcolm suspects there was more than mere impropriety behind her silence.

As Malcolm and Suzanne begin searching for answers, they learn that the child was just one of many secrets Tatiana was keeping. The princess was the toast of Paris when she arrived in the glamorous city, flirting her way into the arms of several men—perhaps even those of Napoleon himself—and the father must be among them. But in the melee of the Napoleonic Wars, Tatiana was caught up in a deadly game, and now Malcolm and Suzanne must race against time to save her child from meeting the same fate . . .

“Grant nicely blends the political machinations of the time with the murder investigation.” —Publishers Weekly

“No one else can combine page-turning suspense, fascinating mystery, a palpable sense of time and place, with such unforgettable and masterfully-drawn characters. Superb!” —Deborah Crombie, New York Times–bestselling author

“One of the best of the tough sleuths” tangles with blackmail and murder in Miami Beach in this hardboiled detective tale by one of the all-time greats (The New York Times).

The day he met Phyllis Brighton, Mike Shayne saved her from jumping out a window—and he has been rescuing her ever since. First he helped her beat a murder rap; now he’s trying to pry her away from the sleaziest lawyer in Dade County: Harry Grange. A mouthpiece for every crook in Miami, Grange is running a blackmail racket when Shayne sees him with Phyllis on his arm at a local gambling hall. Shayne warns his friend to ditch her crooked beau, but she is too proud to take his advice. Unfortunately for her, the relationship will end with murder.

Shayne gets the call just after he gets back to his office. Harry Grange has been found dead on the sands of Miami Beach. Even worse, Shayne’s gun is missing and his friend Larry Kincaid may have used it to gun down the blackmailing lawyer. To save his friends, Mike Shayne will have to outsmart the cleverest killer in town.

Adapted into the film Michael Shayne, Private Detective, this classic PI novel is part of the long-running mystery series that also inspired a 1940s radio show and translations around the world.

The Uncomplaining Corpses, #3
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Uncomplaining...dp/B07B6753V5/
Spoiler:
Quote:
The honeymoon is over—and it’s time for Mike Shayne to prepare for Miami’s killing season

For years, Mike Shayne has tangled with the toughest crooks the country has to offer, outsmarting some and outpunching the rest. He was good at his job, but he had no one to come home to—until he met Phyllis. After rescuing his damsel in distress more than once, the hard-boiled PI found himself falling in love, and before he knew it, they were married and on their honeymoon in Cuba. Unfortunately for the lovebirds, their migration home to Miami marks the height of tourist season, when every gangster in America travels south to play. He may be a married man, but Mike Shayne won’t be spending this balmy winter cozied up at home.

When a real-estate developer tries to hire Shayne to break into his home as part of an insurance-fraud scam, the scheme quickly turns to murder. With more deaths on the horizon, Shayne will have to be careful if he doesn’t want to celebrate his first wedding anniversary behind bars.

Bodies Are Where You Find Them, #5
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Bodies-Where-...dp/B07B67BTT5/
Spoiler:
Quote:
A disappearing corpse draws Mike Shayne into political guerilla warfare

A year after marrying the toughest PI in Miami, Phyllis Shayne longs for a few weeks alone with her husband. She and Mike are about to board a train to New York when a client shows up at the door. Her face gray and her voice slurred, the mysterious woman passes out before she’s able to get through her story. Mike carries the stranger to his spare bedroom and, trying to save his wife from worry, tells Phyllis to go on to the train station without him; he’ll meet her in a few days. When he goes back to check on the woman, she is dead, with one of her stockings wrapped tightly around her throat. Something is fishy, but it’s about to get far more complicated when the body disappears.

The woman arrived just after Mike took a call from Sam Marsh, a close friend who’s in a mayoral race that’s about to turn bloody. To save his friend’s campaign and keep himself out of jail, Mike will have to find the killer—but he’ll have to find the body first.

A Diet to Die For is the 5th in the Claire Malloy series by Joan Hess. I suspect (without much reason for the suspicion ) that this series is the lesser known of Hess' two main series - the other is her Maggody series. But it's my preferred of the two, mostly because I laugh a lot at the interactions between Claire and her daughter, Caron.

(Don't get me wrong, I also like Hess' Maggody series, just like this one more...)

In any case, Diet has dropped to £1.21 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Diet-Claire...dp/B00LEG005O/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Claire Malloy believes there is just one thing better than chocolate...and it's not jumping around in an aerobics class. Nonetheless, she gets roped into accompanying a chubby heiress named Maribeth to Faberville, Arkansas's hottest new fitness centre. Personally, Claire thinks the best way for Maribeth to lose 160 unnecessary pounds would be to dump her abusive husband. But while Claire's teenage daughter Caron unsuccessfully tries every fad diet she can find (as long as it doesn't mean cutting out pizza), Claire has to admit Maribeth's commitment to diet, workouts, and supplements is working...until things go horribly wrong. Besides becoming moonstruck over the big-muscled fitness instructor, Maribeth is acting loony outside the gym as well. And when she ends up "accidentally" dead, Claire starts to exercise her instincts for crime . . . and hunt for a killer.

I rarely post pre-orders, but $2.99 seems to be the new normal sale price point (sigh, oh for the days of $1.99) for MysteriousPress.com/Open Road, so I'm posting this one.

The Distant Clue is about 2/3 of the way through the Captain Heimrich series by Frances and Richard Lockridge. It is a pre-order for $2.99, coming out May 15. It's at $8.00+ at Kobo US, so this really is a sale price of sorts...

link: https://www.amazon.com/Distant-Clue-...dp/B07B69943R/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Secrets of the past lead to murder in the present in this Captain Heimrich whodunit from the authors of the “excellent” Mr. and Mrs. North mysteries (The New Yorker).

Capt. M. L. Heimrich of the New York State Police may not have the flash of hard-boiled city detectives, but there’s no lead the intrepid investigator won’t follow until his every hunch is satisfied . . .

When secretary Enid Vance comes across the bodies of her employer, Homer Lenox, and the town librarian, Loudon Wingate, her discovery marks the beginning of a scandal that will shake the town of Van Brunt to its foundations.

Both men have been shot dead, and the gun is lying right next to Homer Lenox’s hand. All evidence points to a murder-suicide, but the motive is unclear—until Captain Heimrich is called in to investigate the shocking crime.

When Heimrich turns up the book Lenox was writing—a detailed history titled The Families of Putnam County, New York—he suspects the exposé is somehow involved. The detective finds the unfinished manuscript decidedly dull, but when an intruder breaks into Lenox’s house and burns all the remaining papers found at the scene, Heimrich becomes convinced that someone in Van Brunt is willing to kill to protect their family secrets.

The Distant Clue is the 15th book in the Captain Heimrich Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.
