It does look nice. I just wish someone would hurry up and make a full A4 size (13") display version.

Does anyone know what happens if you use a covermode with color? Does it use juice for the color layer when not refreshing?

It shouldn't do - it's still plain old black and white eInk underneath, just with a semi-transparent layer of red, green and blue filters on top (I think). So the black and white eInk layer is still bistable without power.

The "color layer" is just a pattern of translucent coloured dots. It has no effect at all on power. The front light needs to be very much brighter for same brightness as a mono only panel, even reading mono texts.

So, wait. This whole Kaleido stuff is just passive color dots?
You could do this yourself (ineptly) to regular Eink if you could just get the alignment correct (and keep your head in the same position)?

If you can paint sub-millimetre patches of translucent red, green and blue in a regular pattern then go for it! I suppose you could maybe ink-jet print onto an OHP transparency (do they still exist?)

No domestic ink-jet has the accuracy, though some have the dpi.
Also standard ink-jet ink is cyan, yellow and magenta as well as black as it's subtractive print colour. Not additive. Won't work!

The Triton used a similar filter to LCD, which is is also monochrome but with 20 to 50 times more grey levels and backlit. So Triton was too dark and like old displays used R, G, B stripes which meant horizontally you got 1/3 resolution. A 2002 LCD panel of 1600 x 1200 is actually a 4800 x 1200 mono panel with stripes.
Kaleido uses two tricks:
1) Using pastel red, green and blue allows more light reflected, unlike an LCD the light has to pass the filter twice (once on LCD).
2) Using dot patterns instead of stripes. This means instead of 100 x 300 dpi on a 300 dpi panel, the colour is 150 x 150 dpi.

On both schemes a mono image or mono text can't any longer be 300 dpi in all circumstances. The mono resolution varies with image / text content, but like "cleartype" on RGB stripe LCD, the effective resolution is better than the 150 dpi of colour.

Kaleido is still a lot darker than regular mono eInk and also less saturated. It suits traditional 1930s style "US comic" print. Because there is black, nearly white and only 14 greys all shades/hues only add up to about 4000 rather than 32768 or 16,000,000 or more (HDR) on LCD, CRT, Plasma, LED and OLED.

There is little value unless you read a lot of comic books.

And OHP film still exists in three kinds:
1) For pens only, melts in a laser printer and ink-jet runs. (cheapest).
2) For a modern copier or laser (Colour or mono). The heat roller to seal/melt the toner is the issue.
3) Slightly textured on one side or coated. (most expensive)

None work well with ancient liquid toner copiers, but I've not seen one since 1970s.

The easiest source here in town is clear fronts (A4) for making up booklets or CVs, but you need to see the box if buying one to see if suitable for a copier/laser.

Indeed, like a regular LCD, or a single chip camera, it's mono with a passive filter.

The Gallery 3 is a true colour display with cyan, yellow and magenta at each pixel, but it's only suitable for adverts as a full colour page refresh is 1.5 seconds! It's also rather more variations of colour, but nowhere near LCD, CRT (dead), QLED (LCD with blue LED backlight and green or red quantum dots that convert blue light to red or green), OLED (really electroluminescent with phosphors), real LEDs (rare other than massive signage) and plasma (dead). Or DLP. DLP is seriously strange.

Mine came into day.

Early impressions. 8/10. (For my useage of comics/manga/reading books and knowing the limitations of the tech + not wanting tablet features haha.)

Color layer(or whatever) makes it unreadable unless you are under a very bright light/daylight.
If you turn on the backlight it loses a bit of the paperlike look. (It has a sparkle quality if you are close which really kills the paper look. I'm guessing the color layer. But if you are more than 6 inches away you can't see that effect.)

No SDcard slot.
Other than that everything is better than expected, colors are newspaper like but better than expected, the pastel look is kinda relaxing and nice. Enough to tell whateverything is and blend it nicely. (and I'm coming from oled on all my devices.) I dig the marker/wash/watercolor look.

Edit: and it does show the colors when it's off which is cool. (even tho its too dark.)

Oh dear. That sounds awfully like the eInk Triton screen on the ill-fated Ectaco
JetBook_Color that soured me on colour devices. It looked great if you pointed a 100W light bulb straight at it or were outside in the midsummer sun. Otherwise it was muddy and grey, despite what an astroturfing campaign here on MobileRead tried to have you believe.

Here I edited the exposure on this image to match what I saw.

Libre2 vs kindle last gen and this.

Yeah. That said some backlighting really boosts it.

The backlight at 50% is like 10% on a kindle. So you can really dial it in in the dark.

I wouldn't recommend it tho if you were against at least some backlight.
