I thought they made it pretty clear several weeks ago (when the announcement was first made) that they would support ePub as a format. The big question is whether they put e-reader DRM on it, which would limit it to readers blessed by them. Of course, the ideal solution is DRM-free ePub.

Guess, we can only just wait a little bit more and see it for ourselves

Abecedary, could they support both? Could they support ePub with DRM for publishers/authors that want it, and ePub without DRM for the public domain ePub books found here on Mobileread? If they could, then it is likely that they would probably support both options. From a technical standpoint do you know if this is possible? (BTW, I'm not being a wiseass; I really don't know the answer.)

Oh, they'd definitely be able to support unencrypted and encrypted ePubs at the same time (exactly in the same way that all the ADE devices currently work). Again, the issue is whether or not they apply a different encryption scheme to "their" ePubs than the one that is currently fairly widely deployed (ADE).

iRex and Barnes & Noble to Launch New U.S. E-book Reader

Quote:
The battle for dominance in the electronic books market is far from settled as new entrants continue to jostle their way in. iRex, a Netherlands-based company, has said it will launch a new e-book reader in the U.S. later this year. The e-reader will have a 8.1-inch touchscreen, stylus-based navigation and 3G wireless connectivity.

iRex has also partnered with Barnes & Noble to integrate the latter’s e-book store into its upcoming device.

Well, iRex's not quite the "new entrant".

PDF support is good on the iLiad (also with an 8" screen) and on the DR1000S. The unknown though, is how this will change with the assumed Adobe Digital Editions on the device. Previously, iRex used its own PDF reader (based on open source libraries).

We don't know the weight or what kind of "3G" or how it will be paid for.

From this ExtremeTech article:
Quote:
iRex North American CEO Kevin Hamilton says the new product will have about the footprint of the Kindle 2 but with an 8-inch display (because it has a smaller bezel), with a stylus-enabled touch screen.

He says the goal is for this to be a "universal document reader," supporting the ePub standard, Microsoft reader, Barnes and Noble, PDFs, etc. While a formal price isn't available yet, he said he expected it to be competitive with the Kindle.
Given the timing (too soon to be B&N ePub), the DR800 probably includes eReader DRM and Adobe DRM (ePub and PDF). It therefore won't include MOBI DRM (which is currently supported by the iLiad and DR1000S). I'm not sure what the inclusion of LIT means. When I commented on teleread that no Linux device has LIT support I was reminded that Jinke has it (poorly, and without DRM) on the Hanlins. On the other hand perhaps "Microsoft reader" means MS Office formats rather than LIT
