recomended cover size/ratio

Is there a recommended size or ratio for epub files or is it anything goes?

At least 500 pixels on the shortest side. I'd go for at least 600x800.

But anything too big will get rescaled for display, so the exact pixel dimensions aren't vital. I would stick to portrait rather than square, and no squarer than 3x4.

But there's certainly no recommendation in the specs.

That confirms what I thought. I've been using 600x800 myself, but that was simply because that's the screen resolution of my tablet.
