Irving, Washington: Rip Van Winkle (illus-Rackham). v1. 08 May 2017

Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving (1783–1859)
Illustrated by Arthur Rackham (1867–1939)

This short story was first published in 1819. The special edition of Rip Van Winkle illustrated by Arthur Rackham was first published in 1905.

Text is in the public domain worldwide because the creator died more than 100 years ago, and it was published before 1923. The illustrations are in the public domain in the USA, and in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less.

***************
Washington Irving was an American short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories “Rip Van Winkle” (1819) and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” (1820), both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. His historical works include biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith, and Muhammad, and several histories of 15th-century Spain.

Irving perfected the American short story, and was the first American writer to place his stories firmly in the United States, even as he poached from European folklore. He is also generally credited as one of the first to write in the vernacular, and to write stories simply to entertain rather than to enlighten.

-------------
The story's title character is a ne’er-do-well Dutch villager living before the time of the American Revolutionary War. While hunting in the Catskill mountains, Rip falls in with “a company of odd-looking persons playing at ninepins,” partakes of their liquor, and falls asleep. He awakens to discover shocking changes, and learns that he has slept for twenty years.

The story is similar to Johann Karl Christoph Nachtigal's German folktale, “Peter Klaus”, set in the Hartz Forest. (Interested readers can find “Peter the Goat-herd” in the MobileRead library: Grimm's Fairy Tales, Volume II, Appendix B. epub . kindle)

Over the last two centuries, “Rip Van Winkle” has been adapted many times, for stage, film and television (live-action and animation), and music. Rip has, indeed, become a part of the American culture.

Text and images were obtained from archive.org and various online sources. OCR errors were corrected; punctuation formatted; images manually cleaned and enhanced. Embedded font for titling. The List of Illustrations provides links to images.

This book is lavishly illustrated with Rackham’s full-page color images and a number of line drawings. Unfortunately, the full complement of the first edtition’s color illustrations was not available.

I am sorry to say the image quality is not consistent; sources and qualities were too diverse, and some are low resolution. Perhaps someday I will find a scan of the first edition.

Now go read the story, and then indulge in a nice restful nap....
