Marsh, Richard: Both Sides of the Veil. v1. 06 Jun 2021

In the darkly comic highlight of this collection, a bit of amateur magic seems to have turned Mrs. Macrecham into a cat. In other uncanny tales, a chess fanatic can’t stop playing even after death; a cameo ring that belonged to Lucrezia Borgia may still be working its deadly design; a ghost squares off in court to prevent his daughters from being cheated out of their inheritance. Several stories are non-genre and showcase some of Marsh’s humorous writing.

Note: The only available public domain digital version of this book that I could locate (courtesy of the Oxford Bodleian Libraries) is missing pages. See the appendix for the two truncated stories, and note that a third story is entirely missing.

==========
Richard Marsh (12 October 1857 – 9 August 1915) was the pseudonym of English author Richard Bernard Heldmann. One of the most popular and prolific authors of the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods, he is best known now for his supernatural thriller novel The Beetle. Marsh produced nearly 80 volumes of fiction and numerous short stories, in genres including horror, crime, romance and humor.
