You have never done an (definition) update

Every update changes something in the way it detects and matches known baddies.

@AnneT - AV products, perhaps more than any other class of software, are subject to very frequent updates because the AV developers are forever playing catch-up with the bad guys - bit like cops chasing robbers. And, most AV products update silently, those that don't update silently are very annoying, when they seek attention every day or two.

So, whilst you may have been using Bitdefender for 2 years, its 2018 codebase is almost certainly not the same as the 2016 codebase. Bitdefender developers might have introduced a feature to block programs that access the 'net repeatedly - perhaps as part of their anti-ransomware strategy.

Most AV products have a facility to exclude paths from their purview, try excluding the calibre2 directory.

@BetterRed and @theducks: Of course you're right, but I guess that - if Bitdefender was the culprit - desactivating it temporarily should (temporarily) fix my problem... but it doesn't.

You may be the victim of Geo Blocking (assumes that your MR Location is where you are)
Amazon.com is for USA available books. Look at your results log, it may say why each one (site) failed .
No reply, I would assume blocked (external)
Not found, you are looking at a site that does not support the ISBN (language code), or title

The error you posted indicates that something on your computer is killing the calibre worker process used to download metadata. Unfortunately, there is no way for calibre to tell you what that might be.

This just started today. Using 3.17 Search's all fail even with ISDN. Nothing else has changed (Firewall, anti-virus tc). Overdrive plug in is finding most of the 10 books I have searched. This is 1 example of a search.
Running identify query with parameters:
{u'timeout': 30, u'title': u'What Truth Sounds Like', u'identifiers': {}, u'authors': [u'Michael Eric Dyson']}
Using plugins: Google (1, 0, 0), Amazon.com (1, 2, 2), Overdrive (1, 0, 0)

Hi

I have the same problem. This is the error message:

calibre, version 4.8.0
ERROR: Download failed: Failed to download metadata. Click Show Details to see details

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages/calibre/utils/ipc/simple_worker.py", line 54, in run
File "site-packages/calibre/utils/ipc/__init__.py", line 23, in eintr_retry_call
EOFError

I am using Calibre 4.8 On an iMac with Mac OS X 10.15.2. I have this since a while (I think since Calibre 4)

Kind Regards
Walter
