What major changes to Calibre since 2009?

I am just getting back into e/a books after a break of some years. I liked Calibre then but it had same very limiting restrictions of use such as being unable to save highlights and notes.

Where can I find a synopsis of how Calibre has improved compared to when it started? Likewise how the features of the big three (5, 2?) have likewise evolved.

In 2009 there were few plug-ins. In 2019, there are many. See: http://plugins.calibre-ebook.com/ for the official list of plug-ins that is updated by Calibre itself every time that a plug-in is updated. The Mobileread.com plug-in index has stale information because it is not automatically updated as http://plugins.calibre-ebook.com/ is.

One of the major improvements is the editor. Now you can edit the .epub and .azw3 books directly in Calibre.

Why not read the change log?? It is amazing on how many different ways the 3M users USE calibre.

We are on 3.x much has changed except the basic UI, (which got freshened). That alone is a testament to Kovids vision.

Back in 2009, it was 0.x (I came here in 2010). where lots of power user stuff had to be done with the CLI and processed with 3rd party tools.

Calibre was on version 0.5x to start 2009. Since then there have been over 400 version changes, here are links where you can find info on most major iterations since then.

New in calibre 0.7
New in calibre 0.8
New in calibre 0.9
New in calibre 1.0
New in calibre 2.0
New in calibre 3.0
Since calibre 3.0

I must admit I have no idea what you are referring to.
