You can associate the .pyw extension on the Mac with the Python Launcher (buried in /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/[version]/Resources) via More Info/Open With in the Finder. Then double-clicking will automatically open it.

Unhappy Godawful DRM's!

2-Then run ignoblekey
3-Then run ignoblekeygen
4-Then run ignobleepub

So after Step 4 would I then just be able to save to my eLibrary or would I have to import it into Calibre (sp?)????

New to this issue, too. Started with a Palm E2 and needed to move up in the world to an iPod Touch. Now need five (5) reader apps just to read my e-library on the train. ARRGHHHH!

Tried to follow the Python/Calibre thing but find I need actual Step-by-Step instructions. I'm not too thick, but Terminal and Mac script things never concerned me like Basic and DOS did at work so it looks like Greek to me. I don't understand the error messages that Python provides.

Off-line help, anyone?

As a writer, when I put my book on the Kindle, I put a DRM on it because I didn't want people file sharing my hard work. But when I read posts like this I realize that I just frustrated my customers and made it difficult for them to enjoy my book on different devices.

So when I put my book up on B&N website, I clicked NO DRM.

I've learned a lot since I first started this ebook thing.

I'm on your side. Had long chat with a favoured writer, Jeffery Carver, about these DRMs. He pointed me to Python & Caliber. A few of his books are free and I like them so much, I donated funds to him to encourage his continued writing.
I understand about the passion behind what folks are good at doing, but I do know it doesn't pay the rent like money does.
I pay for what I read and object strenuously to copies being freely and illegal distributed. This applies to Software, books, music.....
What I get upset at is a Vendor restricting my purchase from being used on a better Reader. Like buying a Ford and only being allowed to drive it on Ford's roads

A couple of years ago I read a book by a recent NYT Top-10 author. After getting my Kindle a few months ago I decided to go back and read all of his books starting with his first one. All of his books were available at Amazon except the third one, published in 1992, which was only available in paperback, so I ordered it from Amazon.

I just discovered that it was available as an e-book from B&N, so I bought the EPUB version. Thanks to i♥cabbages this is the next book I'll be reading on my Kindle!

Everything worked great! Thanks!

There is now a plug in for Calibre that can strip B&N DRM from ePubs. This is in tools_v2.1, and as usual see Apprentice Alf's Blog for the latest info.

Not terribly into 'Blogs'. Tried to send a note (query) to link removed and it failed. All text lost. Am cheesed off.
Am at wits end getting pwy's to not open Text. Something I did but can't see where to fix.
Another site can't let me know when there's a reply. Will this one?

Hi,

As I tried to explain in my pm ..

On Mac OSX you need to make sure that all pyw files actually launch in the Python Launcher.app.

To make any *.pyw program launch in the Python Launcher.app

**Single-click** on any .pyw file

Go to the Finder->Get Info menu which will open a window with info about that .pyw file.

In that window go to “Open With” then use the pull down menu.

If “Python Launcher.app” is listed, then choose it and hit the “Change ALL” button.

If it is not listed then choose:

“Other …”

It will open up a gui to allow you to select the app you want to open it with.

The use the windows to navigate to

“HD” (or whatever you call you main hard drive)

/System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/Resources

and then select “Python Launcher.app”

Then hit the Change All Button.

After that when double-clicking on a .pyw file, it should autolaunch via the Python Launcher.app and you will not need Terminal.app at all

I have already been using the inept scripts for Adobe epub and pdf files for my Sony Reader with no problems. I now have purchased a Nook Color and have a question about the ignoblekey and ignoblekeygen scripts. I do NOT have the B&N reader software, as I prefer to use Calibre for my book management. Running the ignoblekey script gives me the error that it cannot locate the B&N reader software so that bombed out. Ignoblekeygen runs though. Am I correct in assuming that I can generate a key using this software WITHOUT needing to have the B&N reader software loaded, and that the generated key will work for ignobleepub to generate the final book file? Is there a book I can test this on before I actually purchase one from B&N? Also, if I only download the book directly to my Nook via Wi-Fi, do I need to have the B&N reader to get it to my hard drive so I can work with it using these scripts? (I know...newbie question...)

One of the scripts you mention is an old one, and has been superceded by the other script, which is basically an update for the old one.

The B&N DRM, unlike the ADE-DRM which Sony uses, works like a username/password combo across any version of all the files, and is not keyed to only work on a particular device.

The B&N software is not needed, either to download files (which you can get directly from the My NOOKlibrary page on their website) or for providing the info to unlock the books. You'll probably also be able to transfer the files directly from your Nook to your computer via USB.

B&N have promotional free books you could test it out on. See the Deals forum, where people often post the latest ones, and see if there's anything you might like to read.

Hope this helps.
