Book covers
I just wondered, how do self published authors get book covers? Do they create them themselves?
Being a very visual person and a web designer, I am guilty of judging a book by its cover, and in so many cases, when a cover looks amateurish, I tend to believe that the content can't be much better. In many cases, I find that the tiniest changes could improve the cover. As a test, I'd love to redesign a poorly designed cover and see if the number of downloads/sales increases. Anyone interested? Has anyone here played around with their cover to test it out? |

Quote:
1) High Quality Premade covers. These are usually in the $40-$100 range for good ones. 2) Custom Manipulated Photo/art/3d render covers. These are usually in the $80-$200 range. 3) Full Original Custom Art - I have seen prices as high as $5000 dollars for covers, but there are some darn good artists out there in the $500-$1000 My Omnibus, The First Quartet has one from the #2 category. My first book Enemy of an Enemy has one form the #1 category. #3 is where I would like to be some day. |

You can have a go at one of mine if you want, they were all self-made.

I make all of my own covers. You're perfectly welcome to take a look at mine and play around with any that call to you. Or I'd be very grateful for your opinions. I enjoy making the things but have no idea what I'm doing. Thanks for posting here. I think it would be very interesting to have a discussion here on what works or doesn't with covers.

Wow. That's some cover. Congrats to you and your brother-in-law. I received a nice compliment on one of my covers yesterday. It's for a short story available at Smashwords. She said she thought the cover was pretty. It was inspired by my love of gray, white, black, and red that I've seen used elsewhere. The story is in the mystery/suspense category.

The image was grossly, overly large; and there was another issue, as well. A PM was sent. Don (Moderator) Last edited by Dr. Drib; 09-23-2013 at 08:26 AM. |
