Kobo.com is down

I was reading a book with the Kobo app on my iPad just this morning, but discovered the app wouldn’t load a moment ago. Then I tried it on my iPhone, and the app loaded, then froze, crashed, and now won’t open past the colorful logo page like my iPad. The website is down, too.

I am so used to a persistent internet environment, I never noticed that the app won’t load without connection to the Kobo servers. That troubles me quite a bit. For the time being, I’ll switch over to the Walmart app. Sure miss my KA1.

I am curious. How is Kobo’s server being down affecting your ereaders?

Oh, that's true. Kobo is actually down.

About the app, does it load properly if you disable WiFi entirely?

Edit: It seems to be just their main web servers (kobo.com/kobobooks.com); their upgrades API (api.kobobooks.com) is fine. The interesting thing is that store.kobobooks.com returns the following error:

Code:
[WebException: The remote server returned an error: (503) Server Unavailable.]
   System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() +1686

So, it seems that it's a problem with anything depending on osis.kobo.com.

Thanks for that info. I didn’t have time to dig into it more, so I never shut off WiFi to test connectivity.

It seems everything is back up now. At least on my end.

It won't affect the ereaders very much. When they try to get to the Kobo servers, they fail fairly gracefully if they can't connect. So, if you have books on the device to read, it will be OK.

If you try the browser, it will does use kobo.com to verify the connection is up, but, recent firmware has a prompt to warn of this and asks if you want to continue the connection.

The only problem is if you realise that you forgot to buy or download that book you really, really wanted to read right now

It’s still down for me as of this morning. I bought a book last night and can’t get it onto my reader. I can get it on the app for my iOS devices but not on the Kobo reader itself.

It was a couple days ago for me that something happened with Kobo website, and I had to delete all kobo.com cookies before the I could access my account or my books. Not sure how that would affect the app though.

It (the website) is up for me now, but it's still a bit slower than it usually is.

It’s odd. I can access the online site, their iOS apps but not download or connect on my Libra. So I just sideloaded the book to my device. I saw through their Twitter account that they acknowledged server problems but they claim to be all fixed. Um...no they’re not!

And I don’t want to sign out on the reader or reset the reader. PITA

Edit: just tried connecting with my Clara & it works perfectly fine but not on my Libra. :sobs:

The kobo app on my ipad is not working very well: sputtering, getting stuck...the highlight feature doesn't work most of the time. Should stick to kindle or google play books. A waste of buying books from kobo.

Do you want help, or were you just griping? Either is fine, but this is a conversation originally from last February. The Kobo server issue I brought up was fixed within hours. What you’re describing is different. It may also be posted in the wrong forum. There is a forum dedicated for iOS apps. But I may be wrong, so I’ll assume you need help and aren’t just griping.

My first impression is that you have a bad install. Try these steps:

1. Reboot your iPad. Test the app again.
2. Delete the app, then reinstall it.

I use the Kobo app on iPhone and iPad with none of the problems you’re describing. In fact, the app experience is often more fluid and pleasurable than using a Kobo eReader (but that is true of any ereader vs an app running on a state of the art tablet). How old is your iPad? What iOS is it running? If your iPad is outdated, you can run into issues with newer apps. Mind giving us more details?
