I'm pretty certain that those who purchased Microsoft .lit format ebooks are getting a chuckle out of your statements. Heck, those who purchased books from any of the ebook stores that are no longer in existence will join in the laughter.
Actually, anyone who purchased eBooks from Amazon before the Kindle existed can no longer access any of those eBooks. If they are unable to strip the DRM, then all of those eBook might be unreadable. LIT with DRM are no longer able to be read. Mobipocket eBooks were tied to your computer's main hard drive. So if you changed the system drive or got a new computer, none of those are readable. PDF (I forget how the DRM worked back then) may possibly not be readable. Then there are the stores that went out of business. If you didn't download any of the eBooks you bought, then they were gone.

Sometimes eBooks come and go. And if they go, you lose access.

If you don't know what eBooks are missing, then how do you know there are any missing? Maybe you are remembering incorrectly. You know, the "I could have sworn I had more eBooks from back then. but unless you are sure, you cannot say there is anything missing.

Wrong. There is nothing amiss with my memory. The books were purchased from pre-Rakuten Kobo. As a matter of fact, many still reside (only) on my dust-collecting Aura HD.

If you can find out which eBooks are missing, go to Kobo and see if they still have them. Maybe Kobo no longer has them and is no longer able to offer them for download.

Thanks, Jon, but that's just the problem. They are available to purchase.

I have some eBooks in my library that when I click on them to go look at the info, I get that they are not available yet the same eBooks are available to purchase.

Sometime next week when I have time, I'm going to try the chat and see what Kobo can do to fix this.

Can you actually show they were purchased and not merely loaded on to your dust colllecting Aura HD?

If not, this isn't any more evidence of anything. Just that you managed to sideload books on a device which let you sideload books.

If so, then provide the evidence.

I didn't realize I was on trial. The books are indeed direct downloads from Kobo via wifi to device.

Enough already.

you might wanna climb down off your own mountain.

You were making a claim, providing evidence of a claim is generally good practice.

Given that you stated that you still have those books on your Aura HD, you could very easily post the titles/authors to support your statements. Though since Rakuten purchased Kobo in 2011 and we are discussing ebooks from 2010 back, stating they were purchased from pre-Rakuten Kobo is a bit strange.

If I am not mistaken, I think some of the eBook in my library that don't link to Kobo listings are eBooks originally purchased from Sony.

I think this is a possibility. I have two original e-readers and i have books on them that were sideloaded and added to my Kobo library. I think that's the problem- not purchased from Kobo.

It's going to be a bit of a project to investigate. I'll update here if i discover anything interesting!

Jon was referring to what happened when Sony went out of the ebook business. The customers and their books were transferred to Kobo. Whether Kobo connected those books to the books in their store I don't know.

For the record, my first book purchase from Kobo was March 2012. I can still see that on my devices and in the library. It isn't in my purchase history as I had an issue with my account and the only fix was to create a new one. Kobo transferred all the books, but they did not transfer the purchase history. I don't think I am missing anything. But, I've bought enough books over enough time and my recording of this was terrible in the first few years, that I probably can never be completely sure.

Most of the books were transferred over from Sony to Kobo but there were some which did not transfer. One co-worker got the explanation for 2 of her 3 missing books that Sony no longer had the rights to them so they could not be transferred. Since she had them backed up, it wasn't a big deal.
