This is the USB serial port adapter that worked perfectly for me (used sewing pins to connect to the Kindle board since I'm not good at soldering).
Where I am, it's available with one-day shipping. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TXVRQ7V |

PW5SE serial port
I got a new Kindle PaperWhite 5 Signature Edition (2021) (PW5SE) that came with 5.14.3.0.1 on it. I opened it up (video if you want to see) and can't seem to find a serial port on it.
Has anyone worked with one of these? It looks like there's some kinda JTAG/eMMC connector on the back of the board in the FCC pictures, but they are too low res to make sense of it, and I didn't want to try ungluing that board. Same with removing the MMC chip to read it. I have some more pictures of it up on my wiki. I'm thinking this may use the USB C as a debug port, but thought to ask here if anyone has worked on this before. I'd say perhaps an OTG adapter and a FTDI port might work, but as this has to be in the bootloader, it needs to be real async port. Has anyone worked on this before? |

However, you're unlikely to be able to unlock your PW5 even if you find it, the last few generations of devices have been pretty comprehensively locked down. |

I'm in the US, can I switch my device location back to the US after everything is jailbroken? Does the location effect anything? Thx.

There has to be some way to program a blank device at the factory after the parts are installed. Typically this is done via a JTAG/serial interface. The old hc11 uP's would take a couple lines low, and go into a special mode to load a 1k program via async serial. This would then allow you to flash the chips and such. Looking at the pictures of the under side of the board it really looks like a eMMC connector footprint. I'm betting that's how they program the flash on the production line. Assuming it's not encrypted this might be access. Quote:
I'm not sure what uP these run, but prior models were a freescale ARM and they have a built in mode to load a helper program. So either we do this, and do a bit of arm ASM or just get access to the flash, either eMMC connector or pull the chip off the board. Thoughts? |

If this works then it seems to me the emmc is working. Perhaps one of the partitions is damaged? I imagine a damaged partition can be restored or corrected, but I don't know the procedures and suspect it varies by model and firmware. Dave |
