Combining duplicates
Sometimes I will buy a book in multiple formats. Instead of having Calibre convert them, I want to load both formats as downloaded. Trouble is, that creates two entries in Calibre. Is there any way to combine two virtually identical Calibre entries into one?

Hold the Ctrl Key down and select the source (second) book. Let up the Control key Tap M (and approve) |

Nothing seems to happen. I have a Mac, and tried with the control key, the option key and the command key. The control key pulled up the right click menu, the other keys didn't do anything I noticed.

Oops, yes. Combining didn't show anything, but hitting "M" after the command selection worked. I was expecting some kind of window telling me to hit "M". But it's a secret.
Thanks. |

If you already have one format in calibre, select it in the list and drop the new format on the details panel. This will add the format to the book. It can also be used to replace an existing format with a new version.
You can also use the metadata editing dialog. Drag and drop the file to the list of formats in the top right corner. Or press the "+" button next to the formats to use dialogs to select the format. |

There is a regular menu item (I just never use it). Right click the Edit Metadata Icon

Those should be easier to remember than "M". Not as easy as selecting two books, and finding "M" in the pop up menu would be though.
Thanks. |

That said maybe Kovid could make Merge books something any user could add to their context pop-up menu. You can learn how to request a new feature here. |
