Sony Reader Android, iPhone App Coming in December

Sony Reader Android, iPhone App Coming in December
PC Magazine
- PC Magazine Chloe Albanesius - Pc Magazine – Fri Nov 26, 8:36 am ET

Sony will unveil an e-book store for Android devices and the iPhone in December, according to a note on the company's Web site.

"Reader for iPhone and Android available in December," the note says.

"Get bestsellers and new releases from the Reader Store," Sony said. "Access books purchased at Reader Store on your Reader, PC, iPhone, or Android phone. Make bookmarks, notes, and highlights, and adjust font size as you read."

A screen shot of the iPhone app (below) shows options like "Browse by Subject," "My Wishlist," "Bestsellers," and "New Arrivals," as well as the ability to scroll through books or search for specific titles and authors. The Android app preview shows the Reader library, and a favorites option.

The Sony Reader Store has similar titles and prices as the Kindle or Nook stores. And thanks to Sony's integration of Google Books, there are also over a million books available for free download from the Sony store. You can't subscribe to blogs or Web sites with the Reader, though Sony offers access to newspapers and magazines.

Sony sells three different e-book readers: the Sony Reader Pocket Edition; Sony Reader Touch Edition; and Sony Reader Daily Edition. Only the Daily Edition – listed at $249.99 – has wireless access, however. To load content on the Pocket Edition ($149.99) and the Touch Edition ($199.99), users have to plug their devices into a computer and drag and drop books onto the Readers.

Presumably, however, you won't have to own a Sony Reader to access content from its bookstore on the iPhone or Android devices; just like users can download the Kindle app on a mobile device and buy books without actually owning a Kindle. There was no specific mention of synching, which would allow you to stop reading on an iPhone or Android phone and pick up on the Reader or PC.

First, you just copied directly from the other website. Second, where are the screenshots? I didn't see any in those links you gave. Third, someone beat you to this announcement by several days so there is already a discussion thread.

From what i've seen in screenshots from other sources I'm not impressed with their phone apps. They have few options and fewer formatting abilities.
