So... what do I need to know to start developing apps for the Kindle?

I guess it's not possible to register for the beta any more? or at least I haven't heard back, I've tried a few weeks ago and got no reply.

Is there anything I can do to learn more about developing before the Kindle SDK becomes publicly available?

Learn Java, and when the API is publicly available, learn those.

Also, can we write native apps for linux? Have we methods to work with framebuffer, draw some pixels etc?

It is possible, the Qindle app is written in QT and replaces the normal framework and it's basicaly a native linux app.

You can of course write native linux programs for the Kindle. However, it is unlikely that this will ever be officially supported by Amazon. So you would only be able to install your app on jailbroken Kindles.

I think, we can get two platform for developing.
One is Kindle Java Framework. We can see and run our applicatios in home dashboard. This is good, but we are limited by kindle and java API.
Another, we can use linux native programs on QTembedded. We have more flexibility, but we have problem with it launch.
I suggest this solution: we have launchpad - hotkey manager, which can work as daemon ( we start it at the boot ). We can write application launcher ( something similar to Alt + F2 ) with bookmarks or favourite applications and relate it to some hotkey.

So, just to make sure: I can read the documentation, download sample apps if I find them, but not compile or run them, neither on the Kindle or on an emulator.

For that matter, is an emulator included in the KDK, or is all debugging done on the device?

jozicka, if simpler, you arenot run this. If harder, Konqueror file manager has many of dependecies: X server, KDE libs etc. We haven't it on Kindle, and can't have. Because you can't run it.

but would there be in future possible to have at least something like command promt?

to be able to use commands cd, list, copy etc...?
