Leaked Memo Shows B&Noble Bringing Web Browser And Email To Simple Touch eReader
I hope this also mean that they update the android version on nook touch to something like 2.3 as that would make it compatible with more app than currently.
http://techcrunch.com/2013/05/19/lea...aders-in-june/ An upcoming update will bring a web browser, email and update store app to Barnes & Noble’s super affordable Nook Simple Touch line of e-readers, which will begin rolling out June 1 according to a source close to the matter who wishes to remain anonymous. The 1.5.0 update was created in response to the positive critical and customer response to the recent Nook tablet update that brought Google Play to B&N’s Android-powered devices. |

That'll be nice. I gave one of those to one of my sisters at Christmas and she'd probably use those updated features.

Lets hope its not just rolled out in the US, they have recently sold a lot of devices in the UK so it would be nice if they thought of us as well

Ugh, web browsing on an eink screen is painful at best. I never do it on my Kindle.

Looking forward to it. I played around with the browser on the earlier version of the Nook software a little, and it was nice when it worked.
Having it all the time could be handy. |

I don't use the browser on the Kobo very often, but it sure is nice to be able to download a book onto the device using dropbox and the browser. They don't sell the Nook in canada, but by all accounts, it is a nice device. I hope adding these features keeps them in the running worldwide. The more the merrier!

An eink ereader that could download apps like Kindle, Kobo, Nook, Overdrive, Aldiko, etc would be a nifty device.

This is great news! I was missing the ability to do quick Wikipedia or Google searches like my other ereaders. I sure hope it supports file downloads, including DRM'ed files.

News doing the rounds at a lot of tech sites ... Just hope it can still be rooted, as I doubt the update will fully open it - I've got my eye on a nice TV guide app, among other things - as well as going for an "anyreader". And Opera mobile will probably be better than whatever browser they give it.

Nate at the-digital-reader is skeptical that the update is for real. I tend to agree, at least in terms of the accuracy of the rumor.
The TechCrunch description is at best garbled. How could this possibly be in response to the customer response to adding Google Play to the Nook tablets? Who was asking for an email client on their Nook STR/Glo? Adding a web browser would indeed be a useful enhancement especially if that included some wikipedia integration (which everyone else seems to have now). And there may well be some other stuff in the pipeline for ePub3 support. So I'm not discounting the possibility of an update, just the expectation that it contains any of the features mentioned by TechCrunch. |

It's not ideal for lengthy browsing, but when you just want to look up something quickly, it's handy to have the ability to access the information right on the device. At least, that's what I've found with my T1.

The Nook Simple Touch is easy to root and runs android (2.1, I think, but most reading apps work fine on it) I had a play with mine the other day and installed Coolreader, Kindle and FBReader on it with no problem.
