Johnny Tremain, winner of the 1944 Newbery Medal, is one of the finest historical novels ever written for children. As compelling today as it was fifty years ago, to read this riveting novel is to live through the defining events leading up to the American Revolutionary War. Fourteen-year old Johnny Tremain, an apprentice silversmith with a bright future ahead of him, injures his hand in a tragic accident, forcing him to look for other work. In his new job as a horse-boy, riding for the patriotic newspaper, the Boston Observer, and as a messenger for the Sons of Liberty, he encounters John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Dr. Joseph Warren. Soon Johnny is involved in the pivotal events shaping the American Revolution from the Boston Tea Party to the first shots fired at Lexington. Powerful illustrations by American artist Michael McCurdy, bring to life Esther Forbes' quintessential novel of the American Revolution.

Sixteen-year-old Kit Tyler is marked by suspicion and disapproval from the moment she arrives on the unfamiliar shores of colonial Connecticut in 1687. Alone and desperate, she has been forced to leave her beloved home on the island of Barbados and join a family she has never met. Torn between her quest for belonging and her desire to be true to herself, Kit struggles to survive in a hostile place. Just when it seems she must give up, she finds a kindred spirit. But Kit’s friendship with Hannah Tupper, believed by the colonists to be a witch, proves more taboo than she could have imagined and ultimately forces Kit to choose between her heart and her duty.

Elizabeth George Speare won the 1959 Newbery Medal for this portrayal of a heroine whom readers will admire for her unwavering sense of truth as well as her infinite capacity to love.

My son had Johnny Tremain assigned when he was in grade school. I don't know if he would have picked it to read by choice, since he's more of a non-fiction military history reader (and has been since he was surprisingly young) but he really liked it.

Today's Big Deal at Kindle UK is seventeen (count 'em) books in the Horrible Histories series by Terry Deary for £1.29 each. I used to buy these on business trips to the UK, and bring them back to read to my son - and, who am I fooling - to enjoy myself too, while reading them to him. Somewhere we still have a pile of these in our garage. These are the series with wonderful titles like Measly Middle Ages, Vicious Vikings, Smashing Saxons, and (my favorite) Groovy Greeks. And £1.29 is a good price - they are normally £4-ish, and usually go on sale for £1.90, not £1.29...

Smile link: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/s?rh=n%3A...4725112031_sar

ADD: Be careful, there are multiple editions of some of these - as I discovered when trying to figure out if I want to buy any more...so check carefully before you buy...

One of my younger daughters enjoys such fiction, to the point where I'm deeply grateful that Bethlehem Books has sales several times a year.

The Book of Three is the Newbery Award-winning first title in Lloyd Alexander's classic and excellent children's series, The Chronicles of Prydain. (Really just a classic series, whether for adults or children, IMO...)

Book has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK. Note that all five titles in this series were on sale at Kindle UK about a year ago, so check carefully before you buy.

Tuesdays at the Castle is the first in Jessica Day George's Castle Glower series, which, although I suspect it's really meant to be for young adults, I totally liked. It's a fun series that still makes you think a little, and I love the ending to the book. Tuesdays is on sale right now for $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, and discountable at Kobo. George's books don't go on sale very often, or for very long, so grab this one now if you want it! Just be warned that if you want to read the rest of the books in the series, the later titles go on sale even less often than this one...

See where it all began with the start to Jessica Day George's bestselling series about a castle that can rebuild itself and the children who defend it.

Tuesdays at Castle Glower are Princess Celie's favorite days. That's because on Tuesdays the Castle adds a new room, a turret, or sometimes even an entire wing. No one ever knows what the Castle will do next, and no one-other than Celie, that is-takes the time to map out the new additions.

But when King and Queen Glower are ambushed and their fate is unknown, it's up to Celie, with her secret knowledge of the castle's never-ending twists and turns, to protect their home and save their kingdom.

House of Many Ways is the third in the Howl's Castle series by Diana Wynne Jones. Even though I think it's supposed to be YA, I've read and enjoyed the first book in this series, Howl's Moving Castle. So I'm happy to see another title in the series on sale for $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Charmain Baker is in over her head. Looking after Great-Uncle William's tiny cottage while he's ill should have been easy. But Great-Uncle William is better known as the Royal Wizard Norland, and his house bends space and time. Its single door leads to any number of places—the bedrooms, the kitchen, the caves under the mountains, the past, and the Royal Mansion, to name just a few.

By opening that door, Charmain has become responsible for not only the house, but for an extremely magical stray dog, a muddled young apprentice wizard, and a box of the king's most treasured documents. She has encountered a terrifying beast called a lubbock, irritated a clan of small blue creatures, and wound up smack in the middle of an urgent search. The king and his daughter are desperate to find the lost, fabled Elfgift—so desperate that they've even called in an intimidating sorceress named Sophie to help. And where Sophie is, can the Wizard Howl and fire demon Calcifer be far behind?

Of course, with that magical family involved, there's bound to be chaos—and unexpected revelations.

No one will be more surprised than Charmain by what Howl and Sophie discover.

Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carson Levine, won a Newbery medal in 1998. I haven't read it, but (probably like many other folks on MR) have read and loved lots of other Newbery books. Ella is on sale for $1.99 today at Kindle US.

This beloved Newbery Honor-winning story about a feisty heroine is sure to enchant readers new and old.

At her birth, Ella of Frell receives a foolish fairy's gift—the “gift” of obedience. Ella must obey any order, whether it's to hop on one foot for a day and a half, or to chop off her own head! But strong-willed Ella does not accept her fate...

Against a bold backdrop of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella goes on a quest to break the curse forever.

The World of Howl Collection contains, as you might guess, the three titles in the Wizard Howl series, by Diana Wynne Jones. It's on sale right now in the US for only $5.99, which is a really good deal considering the individual titles are usually $9-ish and up, and don't go on sale very often. So if you need and want all three, buy it now! (Sadly, I have two of the three, so this doesn't really work for me...although it's close...)

This is officially a YA title, but I've sure enjoyed the ones I've read...

Titles include:
  • Howl's Moving Castle
  • Castle in the Air
  • House of Many Ways

Quote:
One of the most memorable and irresistible characters in all of literature—the Wizard Howl—is introduced in Diana Wynne Jones's classic fantasy novel Howl's Moving Castle and makes guest appearances in two stand-alone sequel novels, Castle in the Air and House of Many Ways. Howl's Moving Castle was adapted into an acclaimed and Academy Award-nominated film of the same name, produced by Studio Ghibli and directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

Sophie Hatter never intended to set out and seek her fortune. The eldest of three sisters, Sophie thought she was destined to fail. That all changed the day the Witch of the Waste turned her into an old woman. In order to lift the spell, Sophie barges into Wizard Howl's moving castle and strikes a bargain with Calcifer, his fire demon. But Howl is outrunning a curse of his own, and soon Sophie realizes that nothing is as it appears. . . . Howl, Sophie, and Calcifer return in both Castle in the Air and The House of Many Ways, two stand-alone sequels full of mayhem, secrets, and magic.
