I don't usually post the Tor.com monthly free book deal, because lots of other people do. But I noticed in the email about it that I got today, that the free book is available TODAY ONLY, 7/21/2021. My impression is that usually the free book has been available for a few days at least, although I could be wrong about that. But in any case, since it's got a very short fuse, I thought I'd post now:

Victories Greater than Death, Unstoppable Book 1, by Charlie Jane Anders

Spoiler:
Quote:
Outsmart Your Enemies. Outrun the Galaxy.

“Just please, remember what I told you. Run. Don’t stop running for anything.”

Tina never worries about being ‘ordinary’—she doesn’t have to, since she’s known practically forever that she’s not just Tina Mains, average teenager and beloved daughter. She’s also the keeper of an interplanetary rescue beacon, and one day soon, it’s going to activate, and then her dreams of saving all the worlds and adventuring among the stars will finally be possible. Tina’s legacy, after all, is intergalactic—she is the hidden clone of a famed alien hero, left on Earth disguised as a human to give the universe another chance to defeat a terrible evil.

But when the beacon activates, it turns out that Tina’s destiny isn’t quite what she expected. Things are far more dangerous than she ever assumed—and everyone in the galaxy is expecting her to actually be the brilliant tactician and legendary savior Captain Thaoh Argentian, but Tina....is just Tina. And the Royal Fleet is losing the war, badly—the starship that found her is on the run and they barely manage to escape Earth with the planet still intact.

Luckily, Tina is surrounded by a crew she can trust, and her best friend Rachel, and she is still determined to save all the worlds. But first she’ll have to save herself.

Buckle up your seatbelt for this thrilling YA sci-fi adventure set against an intergalactic war from internationally bestselling author Charlie Jane Anders.

Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay is $1.99 on Amazon.com
This is historical fantasy based on Tang dynasty China. Standalone, but a sequel was released 4 years later.
Quote:
It begins simply. Shen Tai, son of an illustrious general serving the Emperor of Kitai, has spent two years honoring the memory of his late father by burying the bones of the dead from both armies at the site of one of his father's last great battles. In recognition of his labors and his filial piety, an unlikely source has sent him a dangerous gift: 250 Sardian horses.

You give a man one of the famed Sardian horses to reward him greatly. You give him four or five to exalt him above his fellows, propel him towards rank, and earn him jealousy, possibly mortal jealousy. Two hundred and fifty is an unthinkable gift, a gift to overwhelm an emperor.

Wisely, the gift comes with the stipulation that Tai must claim the horses in person. Otherwise he would probably be dead already...

The Godmakers by Frank Herbert is $0.99 at Amazon US. Yes, he did write things that weren't Dune, though, to be fair, none of the rest were quite as good. And he definitely liked to explore certain themes.

Quote:
On the edge of a war-weary and devastated galaxy, charismatic Lewis Orne makes planetfall on Hamal. His assignment: to detect any signs of latent aggression in this planet’s population.

To his astonishment, he finds that his own latent extrasensory powers have suddenly blossomed, and he is invited to join the company of “gods” on this planet.

And people place certain expectations on their gods….

The Swords and Fire (Tethered Mage) trilogy by Melissa Caruso is on sale on Amazon.com
  • The Tethered Mage - $1.99
  • The Defiant Heir - $3.99
  • The Unbound Empire - $4.99
Here's the blurb of the first book:
Quote:
A mage with coveted magic and the scion of a powerful family are magically bound together in service to the Empire.

Magic is scarce in the Raverran Empire, and those born with such powers are strictly controlled -- taken as children and conscripted into the Falcon army, to be used as weapons in times of war.

Zaira has lived her life on the streets to avoid this fate, hiding her mage mark and thieving to survive. But hers is a rare and dangerous magic, one that threatens the entire Empire.

Lady Amalia Cornaro was never meant to be a Falconer. Heiress and scholar, she was born into a treacherous world of political machinations.

But fate has bound the heir and the mage. And as war looms on the horizon, a single spark could turn their city into a pyre.

These are on sale very frequently - the collected volumes less so.
Volume 1 (containing books 1-3) was $1.99 in December. Maybe wait for it to go on sale again, if you're not in a hurry to read it.

The first book Swords and Deviltry is usually on sale for $1.99 several times a year. I'd suggest waiting on that as well.

Also note that Shadowland is an "authorized sequel".

The Jordan sale is also on @ Kobo Canada and amazon.ca.

I'm lucky. I picked up a complete omnibus back when The Wheel of Time was nominated for a Hugo. It was free with a membership. The omnibus alone was worth the membership, and I enjoyed a number of the other novels.

Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger is $2.99 on Amazon.com and other worldwide retailers, such as Kobo.

This was on my wishlist, and is highly recommended by many. I was just looking at it today, thinking maybe I'll buy it with my Summer Rewards discount, because it will probably not go on sale any time soon.

Quote:
A Texas teen comes face-to-face with a cousin's ghost and vows to unmask the murderer.

Elatsoe—Ellie for short—lives in an alternate contemporary America shaped by the ancestral magics and knowledge of its Indigenous and immigrant groups. She can raise the spirits of dead animals—most importantly, her ghost dog Kirby. When her beloved cousin dies, all signs point to a car crash, but his ghost tells her otherwise: He was murdered.

Who killed him and how did he die? With the help of her family, her best friend Jay, and the memory great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother, Elatsoe, must track down the killer and unravel the mystery of this creepy town and its dark past. But will the nefarious townsfolk and a mysterious Doctor stop her before she gets started?

A breathtaking debut novel featuring an asexual, Apache teen protagonist, Elatsoe combines mystery, horror, noir, ancestral knowledge, haunting illustrations, fantasy elements, and is one of the most-talked about debuts of the year.
