Overdrive CEO hints Kindle Library launching this Sept

We've all already heard that Amazon is working with Overdrive to make their DRM work with public libraries--not like it didn't work before. Anyhow it looks like Overdrives CEO has dropped a hint on the launch date.

Note for folks who have been following Amazon's rumors this also is close to the Amazon tablets launch date.

Quote:
<sic>During the final session, he delivered a broad hint, by summarizing the main points of his “Crystal Ball Report” :

Streamlining (both downloading and ordering)
Explosion (we have gone from two reading devices to 85 and more are coming)
Premium (the library catalog as the most premium, value-added site on the Web)
Traffic (enormous growth coming by year’s end)</sic>
(more ...)

Sure it did, you just needed the Kindle's PID*.

*Not sure if folks knew/know this but Overdrive used the MobiPocket DRM. The Kindle DRM was exactly the same DRM, but the Kindle hid the PID making it difficult for folks to read library books on their kindle. Eventually Overdrive quit supporting MobiPocket DRM.

The Kindle integration will be different. I believe (based on everything officially said) Overdrive is just going to hand over fulfillment to Amazon's servers, where you'll pick the Kindle or Kindle app to deliver content to. It is going to support syncing, save your notes/highlights to kindle.amazon.com, etc. So Overdrive is not going to host the content, nor will they know about your Kindle IDs or Amazon account info. They'll just have an ASIN associated with every title they offer. Unlike the situation with Mobipocket content (which is still supported by Overdrive BTW).

It probably will not be possible to return content 'early' as with ePub/PDF.

Is it going to launch in all the countries that Overdrive currently operates library services in, or is this yet another "US only" thing?

It's only in the United States...perhaps other countries will be added later, that's unknown.

Great, we can triple the number of users and also make sure they all keep their books the full 3 weeks in one swift move.

Unless libraries have the budgets to buy additional "copies," this could really make the wait times ridiculous.

Having to wait any length of time for the delivery of a digital copy has already been ridiculous, I believe this will make the times absurd, or perhaps even ludicrous.

I was thinking it was sooner, since almost every Library Overdrive site has scheduled maintenance showing up on their site. I just *knew* I'd discovered the secret date! (I am) Wrong again!

This service may experience interruption during the following times: Friday, August 5 from 11:00 PM – Saturday, August 6 at 6:00 AM US Eastern Time and Saturday, August 6 from 11:00 PM – Sunday, August 7 at 6:00 AM US Eastern Time. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I know the history. And it is still true that library books were never supported. Now, you could obtain scripts that Amazon did not want you to know about, in order to modify the files (and technically not remove the DRM) in order for the Kindle to read them. But that hardly qualifies as "supporting."

It will be good to have all the major readers support library books. This can only help the ebook market.
