How to add alternate fonts without replacing system fonts.(this time this is a guide)
UPDATEnly for kt I.e kindle touch.want a peek, look at geekmasters post for screenshots.and the 6 alternate fonts appear only when you put short filename, some time one word like averia will also do
Some of you want custom fonts.there is a fonthack but it replaces system fonts.so here is a guide to help you add alternate fonts without replacing system fonts.this process was discovered by eureka and was tested by adamselene. 1.create a file in the root if you are connected normally or in /mnt/us if you are connected through usbnetwork or ssh. 2.the file should be empty, shouldn't have an extension and should be named USE_ALT_FONTS. 3.put your fonts directly in the folder fonts I.e don't put the fonts in a folder in the folder fonts. 4.Then type ;fc-cache in the search bar and press enter. Wait for 10 minutes till the framework restarts.then go to a book, press aa button and there you have your extra fonts other than serif, condensed and sans serif. Note:don't use fonts that you have initialized in fonthack.the kindle can display upto 3 system fonts and 6 user fonts.for one font there have to be four variations, like regular, italic, bold and bold italic.it won't work if you make 4 copies of the same font and rename them acccordingly.if you don't put 6 of your own fonts then there will still be some fonts that you didn't put.these are fonts that amazon put but hadn't implemented before this hack.and finally, the fonts have to be named starting from only A,b,c,d,e,f or g.if you want to use fonts that don't start from either of these letters then simpley renaming them won't do.you have to manually change The embedded font name using a font editor. @yiming the amazon fonts have some fonts that start with h.I didn't want you to go to through the trouble of finding a name that is before in alphabetical order.

So I've enabled the alt fonts on my kindle touch, now to add some new ones. What custom fonts do you all recommend?

sorry to bump this again, but can you guys recommend a good serif font that will work with this alt font method? I'd love something similar to the default serif font, but with a bit more weight.

I don't use this.
webfonts? is it? Noticia Text is cool or is it old school? http://www.myinkblog.com/10-awesome-free-serif-fonts/ (google spat that out) I have cloned the entire google webfont collection personally, for these type of things. Hope that helps. |

I'm not 100% I vaguely recall smacking something through a script. or get variants - or something... for a similar type thing on the 3
IIRC you could even just rename them - although I don't know if that works - I think you have to edit the meta in this version too. HTH |

I threw the new version of Caecilia that was pulled from the recent K3/K4 update onto my Touch, and it appears to have simply replaced the old Caecilia Serif option. That is unless I'm just imagining things, but the Serif font looks much better now.

I'm not entirely certain how well the Kindle's fontconfig will handle a copy of the exact same family in a different folder... If it didn't explode, and fc-match Caecilia points to the copy in the userstore, you're probably safe, though .
